This upcoming Wednesday, I'll be flying out with the wife and kids to Sydney, Australia which is where my wife is from. It's time her parent's got to spend some quality time with their grandkids.

I'm going to have to figure out what kind of "out of country" plans that are out there so I can continue to follow UConn football. If anyone else out there has any recommendations, please let me know. Right now, my best solution is using my friend's Slingbox login but since most 12:00pm games will be on at around 2:00am on Sunday morning, it's going to be tough to see things live.

My uncle is Australian - as I understand it, ESPN3 is available there.

I assume it's the same there as it is here, but I guess you'll find out.

Safe travels - enjoy the new digs.

Be good, and if there are any "Knappe" types out there, be sure to send them to the Nutmeg State! :)

Yes, the Sydney Swans are going to be my local AFL footy team but it's really hard to cheer for a team whose mascot is a Swan, know what I mean?

So far here in Rio Firstrow is the only option. WatchESPN here is total crap. Just "futebol". Replay window is EMPTY. Its funny even Brazilian posters on the site complain about the absence of NCAA programming. Thanks for screwing me ESPN. Hope you have better luck down under. Good luck and enjoy the Fosters!

Find a friend who you can pay to set up "Slingbox" on their TV, then you can pick up their channels on computer. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but friends (huge college football fans) spent a year in Hong Kong and they swore by it.

Thanks Samcro. Yeah Ive looked into Slingbox but don't currently have a good candidate in the U.S. Have one friend in CT who is experiencing difficulties that prevent him from helping for now. My bro lives in Arizona and I'm not sure how much UConn programming I could get from his satellite/internet.

Of course you were probably responding to the OP, as much as I'd like to think its all about ME:oops:.

Boo!!! Hawthorn all the way!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorn_Football_Club

I used to watch them when Aussie football was played late at night on what I believe was NESN (the games were something like 1am or so back in the late 80's). I used to root Hawthorn on against teams like Carlton, Collingwood, and St. Kilda. My favorite player was John Platten, for no other reason than the fact that he was the most recognizable player on the pitch with his great "Kenny G" hair style:

I realize that you won't be living in Melbourne, but....Go Hawthorn!! ;)

Best of luck. I went to an AFL game when I was in Australia in 1999. Had an awesome time and found the sport to be fascinating. Wish it would show up on tv here from time to time...I know Fox Soccer used to carry it. Anyways....best of luck down under

Don't know if they still do, but the goal umpires in Aussie Rules used to wear fedoras and trenchcoats for games. One guy wore his hair Joe Garagiola style but nobody knew it until his hat blew off one day. The announcer seemed genuinely surprised when he said he didn't realize the guy "parted his hair in a circle."

Safe trip... I use ESPN3 in Germany, but the time zone differences aren't so nice. Hopefully that works out better for you.

Beyond supporting swans, sSomething is wrong with a supporter of an Aussie Rules "AFL" team in Sydney that (1) moved from Melbourne after 100+ years, and, (2) even worse, adopted a really weak team song to the tune of Notre Lame's fight song. Anyway, I watch AFL games for a while when they are often broadcast and here's some possible helpful input.

Slingbox: As long your friend/relative hooks it up right, leaves it alone, and doesn't change channels during games, that may be a dependable alternative. Once it's set up, bribe them to leave it alone.

VPN: Can sometimes help, but invest a nominal fee in a quality VPN versus trying freebies. For example, hidemyass.com can help you access US websites (or, British, Brazilian, etc.) which may otherwise be blocked in certain countries.

ESPN3: As as long as you can use someone's cable company ID in the US, it can be good. Otherwise, it can sometimes be worthless outside the States.

Other websites exist, get shut out/down, re-jig their URLs to other locations in places like Macedonia, Latvia, Tunisia, etc., and are replaced by working alternatives. Google's your friend. Currently, www.atdhenet.tv and atdhe.bz are rumored to be good. The NC State game just might have been broadcast on one of them). Others reportedly worth a shot include www.thefirstrow.eu, www.ilemi.bz, www.Justin.tv/directory/sports, http://finalball.com/, http://channelsurfing.ws/, http://nowwatchtvlive.com, and www.live-online-tv.com/tv-sport-tv-sports-tv-online-live.html

During games, SeoulHuskyFan is often on the Boneyard chat and appears to know the current functioning channel surfing websites. Shoot me a message, and I'll share some other helpful info for another Huskies' fan many time zones from home. Good luck with your move.

I used to root for Essendon. Are they still around?

Hey, say hi to Adam Coles for us! He lived in the Sydney area (okay maybe he lives in the US now, no idea).

Best of luck down under.

Thanks so much to all for the help. Specifically on the Swans, ironically enough, I lived in South Melbourne when I first moved to Australia back in 2001 for a year which was the Swans prior home so it seemed to make sense. The fight song thing is hilarious to me. Most of the AFL teams seem to have songs that share the melody of various colleges (I know I've heard the Michigan fight song many times).

Safe travels to all those going down to Maryland and fingers crossed that our offense finally finds a good rhythm.

Odds are it would be a punter given the country. Lots of Australians are good at kicking the ball.
