OT- Mariano torn ACL

Mariano Rivera tore his ACL shagging fly balls in batting practice, feels like the end of an amazing career. Been a crazy week or so in the sports world, seems like everytime I look there is some horrible story.

As a Red Sox fan I have a ton of respect for the guy. He brought it every night year after year. There's never been anyone else like him.

My favorite Mariano moment is when he stood there and had a good time at Fenway as the crowd mock cheered him during the Red Sox ring ceremony in 2005. Can't imagine too many guys would of been smiling and laughing thru that.

Classy guy and a huge loss for the Yankees. They have guys who can throw in their bullpen for sure, but you can't replace this guy.

Teams will be saving money on bats. No pitcher broke as many bats as Rivera. The amazing thing about him is that he basicly had 1 pitch, the hitter knew what was coming and still couldn't hit him. He was the best ever and classy guy to boot.

The guy broke down in tears in the postgame interviews last night when asked if his career was over. I wonder if he goes for it one last time to go out on his own terms. Tough to go through 6-8 months of rehab at age 42-43 though.

This was seriously devastating news and a truly sad story. Mariano is not only the best reliever in the history of baseball (and it's not all that close in my opinion), but he's also one of the classiest athletes you'll ever meet and a genuinely nice guy. To see him go down like this, most likely ending his illustrious career, is truly heartbreaking.

Mariano was one of the classiest baseball guys I've ever followed. Absolutely professional in demeanor and behavior, incredible pitcher (.070 ERA, .174 BA in 141 post season games against top competition in pressure situations), and as certain a Hall of Famer as there is. Never once saw him try to embarrass or show up competitors, or ever make an excuse for his (rare) failings. It just feels sickening that his career may have ended in the outfield in KC, rather than on the mound in NY.

Mo is the best there ever was. He is still today ONE of the best in baseball but that said if you watch closely, players have been getting more wood on him (the ones that don't break it) than ever. Not as many swings and misses but he's still great. It's a tremendous loss but Robertson is a front line closer on any team out there and Soriano is more than adequate for the 8th. What makes this hurt was the loss of Joba earlier. The Yankees bigger problem is getting to the 9th with a lead. Mo would have quit but I think but he doesn't want to go out like this, hence the challenge that he might take up. Interesting to see but I think Robertson will be OK.

totally bummed for the guy, even as a Sox fan. really rough way to go out - not on his own terms. woulda been nice to have been able to have retired and play his last game at Yankee stadium to a rousing, long, sustained ovation. no real silver lining, but the guy did have an amazing career and is clearly the best closer to ever play the game...

Just incredibly unfortunate that this has happened to Mariano. I am sure he will rehab and come back true to what he declared two days ago, but something like this happening just makes you stop and realize how incredible it is that Mariano has been able to do this for as long as he has. Most closers are overvalued, but when you have the body of work that Mariano does, it is almost impossible to overvalue.

His cutter is the single best pitch in the history of baseball. To think about the fact that he has had a top season every single season he has been the closer, and that he has done it with only one pitch is just ridiculous.
