As I am definitely in the senior category now (perhaps a few on here are also) hospital visits have become more likely. In my adult life I guess I've been fortunate to only visit 2 hospitals, Yale and St Vincent's in Bridgeport. I wish I had known beforehand the difference in care between them.
I have nothing but good things to say about Yale and I have some significant experience there - Ascending Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Kidney xplant and cervical fusion. What can I say, things wear out.
A month ago I followed a doctor who was at Yale to St Vincent's for another cervical fusion. Leaving him out of the equation, the care I received was horrible. From the intake person to my daily care to post discharge this place really sucks. This would have to be the last hospital on the planet before I set foot in there again.
Maybe I just had the perfect storm of crappy luck, maybe not.

Far and away if I need a hospital, Yale is the place I'm heading.

I doubt your story is unique. In NJ for relatively routine care (I had a hernia surgery, my mother various ailments) the local hospitals were fine, but when my wife became seriously ill we commuted to UPenn for most of her specialists (never hospitalized, however).

Similarly, her mother was at MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) Medical Center for serious heart surgery following a heart attack before relocating to AZ.

And when my wife needed a replacement liver - on to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix. Spoils you for any other care.

Our limited experiences with the immediately local hospital have been uniformly bad except for their GI department where she had some "procedures". Our experiences with my mother, her mother and the emergency room have never been "good".

Ultimately I am a big advocate of university medicine, when possible.
