I'm a college student looking to network and find a career, and just created my LinkedIn profile. I was just wondering if anyone has had any success finding work/business opportunities using LinkedIn? It seems like a good idea, but I was just wondering if you all have had any personal experiences using it?

I started using it around a month ago. Haven't explored it yet though. I use indeed.com to search for jobs and internships, at least that's what my professors/advisors tell me to use.

I'd recommend having one. Not sure you'll have a ton to put in there but recruiters/head hunters and HR people do look at it. I think I get about a recruiter a week trying to sell me ons witching jobs.

The best thing you can do on LinkedIn is swing for the fences. Pick a career path and search for higher ups in your line of work. Ask them to connect on LinkedIn. If they accept, email them through LinkedIn and ask for a meeting etc.

Some of them will find this ballsy and might respond. I only suggest this because I just hired someone who did this. I figured she must be pretty aggressive and hardworking so I replied and met with her.

To add to the above, I once asked the president of a major bank to meet with me just so I could ask for some career advice. He offered me a job over lunch...and he paid for lunch.

It's good to try and connect with professors on linkedin, too. I just recently started up in a masters program, and had a hell of a time finding a professor to write me a recommendation since I'd been out of undergrad for 3+ years now.

I actually have a friend, who takes care of his company's (engineering firm) Linkedin profile, and he says it's a useful tool tool reach out to companies you're interested in (obviously more helpful for smaller companies). Indeed is also my go to for job search, but it essentially just pulls from all the other job sites like montster, careerbuilder, usajobs, etc. Linkedin is just a nice networking tool that eventually pays off, but only if you're active with it.

I suppose I consider myself an early adopter of LinkedIn. I've been on it a very long time.

I recommend against the email blasts to companies and what is known as "Open networking" especially for recent grads and entry level positions. Maybe it's just me but I find it annoying.

A better approach may be to link to recent alumni you know at the companies you are interested in or other people who may know someone. Use those contacts and the traditional resume application process to lead them to your page.

Obviously, your profile should be well.written complete and show what they want to see. There is more room to expand on your experience than a traditional resume.

For others already in the workforce, keeping your profile current is important. Recruiters do mine the site for keywords. If they don't reach out to you, you can certainly reach out to them.

This is the one exception to the no spam rule. If you can find the HR or recruiting coordinator for a company, then by all means send them an invite. Just make sure you change the default message to something more in line with an abbreviated cover letter.

Like anything else it is a tool, if you're doing it wrong you can look foolish or even hurt yourself.
