He has cut three people from the team already including the starting point guard. The kid said, “He basically told me that I wasn’t good enough to play for him”.

Well, the team sucked.

I'm not going to be mad when he holds the players to a Big East standard.

Quick, someone fire off a blowhardy post about how disloyal kids like Oriakhi and Smith are.

Kid was a team captain too.

At least they offered all three kids academic scholarships if they decided to stay.

I just saw that, it's good for the kids. On the other hand, cutting them from the team seems a lot like the childish act of being dick so your girlfriend breaks up with you and you don't have to do it yourself(not that i ever did that).

I don't see the point of this. If the kid is good enough to be a 2 year starter for SMU, are you going to significantly upgrade him at this point in recruiting? A 71 year old new coach doesn't have the luxury of tearing it down to build it up.

happens all the time. If a kid isn't good enough to play in the Big East, why waste 40k a year in scholarship?

hes going to fill that team with jucos or frosh and have 1 year to prime then up then hit the BE. he wants to hit the BE with a team thats competitive. fair enough. his name will allow him to recruit down there. after the b12 teams and uh he can battle outside texas teams for the next tier of kids and win that to keep some home. the fact that smu had the balls to make a spalsh is a good sign overall, there not trying to sit around and collect a paycheck with the upgrade like some schools have done after upgrading one conf to another.

Reports indicate that Jim Calhoun was waiting outside the basketball offices in a 16 passenger van to drive the three cut players up to Storrs.

SMU is making a big splash. Very nice for the Big East. UH is also already improving.

SMU may have had some balls hiring a guy unconnected with recruiting for many years, but Brown was also around Plan F for SMU. Whether Brown succeeds in recruiting quality Dallas-Ft. Worth or Texas players is TBD, but his assistants including the head coach-in-waiting (ex-Illinois State coach) have extended (ex)Big 12, (ex)Big 10, and Chicago backgrounds. History's proven little will stop the school's massively deep pocketed alumni from buying things some view as a quick fix, but time will tell how that works this time.
