OT- LA marathon

That is crazy in a marathon.

Not related to these finishers but LA marathon handed out finishing medals to anyone who completed 18 miles. Doesn’t seem right that those 18 milers receive same medal as those that completed full marathon. I realize that this was a safety measure due to heat but there should be two different medals to distinguish.

This decision is really giving a certain kind of FB commenter a field day right now. Figured for sure there was missing context and of course there is. It was a change implanted due to forecasted heat, which reached 90 degrees, so that runners didnt run until they keeled over if the heat was too much, since the amateurs and slower runners would be running through the hottest part of the day.

Probably wins without the mishap

Not sure that woman actually impacted his decision making. No clue what his thought process was deciding to go down the side area clogged with spectators vs the blocked off open road right ahead of him.

I saw comments under the video I posted about him going the wrong way but didn't know what they were talking about. What an absolute sh^^show. They should apologize to him, give him additional money and make him the co-winner.

As a runner you're supposed to know the course but they clearly threw him off with that absolute confusing mess at the end of the race. Your brain is fried at that point of the race, you don't give the runner a jigsaw puzzle to solve.

.-.
There are marathons, half marathons, 10ks, 5ks, etc. No need to muck up the difference between them all. Either you finish a marathon or you don't.

The running world always has issues. They really screwed up in Atlanta. The three leaders including McClain were led off course by a motorcycle because of a situation where the police were called away during a crucial part of the race. She turns left at the cones followed by 2 runners. By the time they backtrack they had been passed by about 8 runners.

I was at the finish line to meet some of my friends who were running. It honestly didn't seem particularly confusing. But it was hot as hell and I'm sure the dude was running on fumes.

The marathon SUV with the time clock and 2 police motorcycles when right. another motorcycle went straight. The runner was probably focused on the three vehicles that went right and was just following them. The woman probably had little to do with it but who knows. It does kind of throw you off when you have to stop and get thrown off your stride.

I found it chaotic and confusing just watching it. When I was a kid I ran road races all over the state of CT and cross country races all around the country and I've never seen anything like this.

Why were all those people on the course with 400 yards to go? Why was that lady with the flag on the course and why was she cutting in front of him?

The organizers butchered that race. I hope they admit they screwed up and reward him.

A very confusing bottleneck there.

This is on topic - great analogy to the season. The rest of the NCAA has left us for dead and thinks we can’t win…but just wait for our boys to gain some steam!

.-.
I was at the 25 mile mark for the NYC marathon a few months ago to see the top 20 runners, then I made a move to the finish fine for another 30 minutes. It was a gorgeous day, all the spectators were super supportive, and it was inspirational.

Color me not enraged over giving out medals for those who only ran part of it.
Let's face it. No one on this message board, and about 99.99999% of the population couldn't name 5 runners in that race, or any marathon.

All a medal does is act as a conversation starter amongst small groups of friends of race participants.

I also wouldn't be surprised if almost all the participants who took the medallion without completing the whole marathon tell anyone who asks about the medallion they didn't complete the whole race.

He absolutely wins without that mess up.

Different circumstances but similar to Dustin Johnson at the PGA tournament at Whistling Straits where DJ was penalized for grounding his club in a bunker towards the end of the last round. The "bunker" in question is where several fans were standing and was smaller in size than most bare spots on a well-groomed lawn. It basically looked like a bare spot on the course where fans had been standing and walking all weekend.

Usually in golf fans aren't allowed to stand and watch the tournament standing in a bunker.

Likewise, keeping fans off a race course in front of the leader, shouldn't be a tall task for race officials.
