OT- Jimmy Garoppolo contract

ESPN, FOX, Facebook, Amazon, CBS & NBC.

The league is floundering? What are you talking about? Fox just paid $660M for 11 Thursday Night Football games/year. By comparison, CBS & NBC were paying $450M for 10 games/year.

Yep, my bad. The NFL has never been healthier, ratings have been incredible.

A ratings decline on its own does not equal "floundering".

Seven of the top 10 and 37 of the top 50 TV broadcasts of 2017 were NFL games.

By chance do you happen to know how network television ratings have done as a whole this year? Down about an equal number to the NFL ratings. Interesting.

Yet media companies continue to throw record cash at the NFL. Oh to be in such peril!

I guess the Patriots wouldn't have wanted to put the franchise tag on him, but with a 40 year old QB in Brady, he certainly seemed like the heir apparent.

I haven't followed the NFL as vigorously this season due to the state of the Giants, but it seems to me that a lot of franchise QBs for franchises that are used to stability at that position are at or near the sunsets of their careers, and it's going to be a seller's market for the top handful of younger QBs for the next several seasons.

If you don't think the NFL has problems I don't know what to tell you.

As a 49ers fan, I like the deal, it's absurd but that's where we the market is for QBs. He's got Belichick's endorsement and he beat two playoff teams (not counting the Rams who were resting their starters). Plus Shanahan had probably the best look of all HC's at Kirk Cousins and Jimmy and the 49ers chose Jimmy. Though I fully expect the ownership to f this up somehow, but if he can beat seattle a couple times in the next two years I'll be happy.

He’s legit. If you had any doubt, he joined the second worst team in the league and they never lost again. They beat several good teams in that stretch. It was a great deal for the 49ers.

You know that's not how this works. Otherwise, the schools in the NBE would be more broke than UConn.

Good for him. Getting that kinda coin with less than 10 games under his belt, I cant imagine the money he'll get after taking the 49ers to the playoffs for the next five years.

Let's wait and see what happens when the rest of the league gets a chance to study some game film and throws some defensive wrinkles at him.

.-.
Oh you're talking about the "failing nfl". Ratings disaster, trust me .

Recently I haven't followed the NFL like I used to but what the heck is going on with contracts? I hear Garoppolo is good but the money is insane for someone who hasn't proven they are a star. Several other qb's are about to get bigger deals. The league is floundering, where is all the money coming from?

Reports: 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo agree to record-breaking five-year deal
Garoppolo is a beast, Kraft & Brady really messed up the Pats future.

The real question is who is gonna be better and the face of the NFL moving forward Carson Wentz or Jimmy Garoppolo???

Smells like the Chiefs deal they gave to Matt Cassell. Those were some tough years, lemme tell ya.

If the 49ers didn’t pay him, another team would have. He put up great numbers with zero weapons around him. I think it was a smart move.

.-.
The Patriots didn't have a choice. As proven by this contract, it was either trade Brady or trade Garoppolo.

You also forgot Deshaun Watson. Jared Goff of the Rams is doing quite well now, too. It's not like Jimmy G. has it all that easy going forward. QB talent in the league seems to be improved and developed quite a bit these days. This ain't the Neil O'Donnell, Hugh Millen, etc, years.

And with an NFL deal, you really just need to look at the guaranteed money, not the entire deal. Garoppolo is guaranteed $74M - it will probably be restructured in some fashion to deal with caps at some point, but it’s $74M. It’s a ‘record’ deal, but in terms of the guarantee, it’s less than Matthew Stafford’s $92M.

Struggles or not, the NFL prints money like the other leagues only wish they could. The 49’ers won’t need a bake sale to make payroll.
