Before I went to work this afternoon, I had NBATV on. At 2:00, the Orlando Magic introduced JV as their new head coach. I remember him in college at Kansas and his years with the Utah Jazz very well. I hated Kansas and never knew much about him over the years.
He was introduced today as being a high character guy. And after watching him in the press conference, he is certainly an impressive man. I hope he finds much success as a head coach in the NBA, and I give him credit for taking on the mess that is the Dwight Howard-I mean-Orlando Magic franchise.

Why would anyone give a NBA journeyman point guard who has only been an assistant coach for two years and has no head coaching experience a head coaching job in the toughest league on the planet?

I know he was an assistant for a legendary head coach but that can't be enough preparation for him to be hired as a head coach.:p

because no big name coach would want to step into that situation in Orlando, you gotta start somewhere. A guy who wants to be a first time HC will step into any situation.

I remember one year when he was on the Jazz, Vaughn had a Klaiberian start to the season - he missed his first 30 or so shots.

EDIT:

Wrong team, and wrong number:

He also set an NBA record for consecutive missed field goal attempts to open a season, missing his first 22 to start the 2001 season with the Atlanta Hawks.

He was making a reference to the Kevin Ollie situation at UConn.
