Coming into this season ESPN hyped this kid up so much they compared him to LT for what one big hit. Yesterday he decides to not play due to sore ribs, which did upset Spurrier. So far only 2 sacks and 12 tackles he's good but I thought this kid was the next LT ESPN whats going on? Maybe he believed the hype.

I'd imagine having had Marcus Lattimore as a teammate creates a unique perspective about counting the days to NFL eligibility...and would probably force me to consider my motivation to play the last few games and risk injury for the reward of leading USCe to a BBVA Bowl bid.

which is why its bull$hit that he couldn't be allowed to enter the 2013 draft. I blame ESPN for all this they will go on over how he was overhyped when they are the ones who overhyped him.

It's everything. ESPN wouldn't get off his dong, he has had nagging injuries, and opposing teams are not making it easy on him; ie isolating him, doubling him, etc. Still a top ten pick.

Clowney is not overrated in the slightest. His backlash reminds me of when people were down on Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma.

The biggest problem is not letting kids declare for the draft when they want to.

If the NCAA, the SEC, or SCar had any balls they would tell ESPN and everyone else to knock it off.

The kid has a multi million dollar NFL contract waiting for him. If he has a strained rib cage muscle, which is what it sounds like, then any criticism is wrong.

Esp. in this concussion/long term health convo. What they are saying is they want an amateur college student to take the needle to play.

The kid was a man child when he was a senior in high school. A rare, freak of nature athlete. He is looking at millions of dollars as a top 3 pick. The fact he was not already allowed to declare is ridiculous.

Double edged sword of minimum draft age/status.

Spurrier seems p!ssed that his bell cow won't budge.

Good for Clowney. I might be more ticked off at him if he was a pro and getting paid, but he has every right to protect his draftability.

Bingo, what was there left for him to accomplish after last year? Last year he had to watch teammate Demetrius Summers suffer possibly a career ending injury. Leave it to a guy like Spurrier who has made millions off of the cheap labor provided by these kids to object.

So what do you do under current rules? Let him play only when he feels like it - slippery slope no?

Not sure I know the answer.

If I was a USCe fan I would be pissed. Spurrier, however can choose to not play him. He could concoct a scenario where he simply says the kid's NFL future is too valuable to risk injury and lose out on a potential 8 figure signing bonus. He will never do it, because well his making millions is more important than anything that could happen to Clowney playing college ball.

Spurrier gets paid millions to win games. He stands to win more games if Clowney plays. Its not complicated. Again, fans I understand. A HC who has made millions and is self serving in his interest of whether the kid plays, pfft.

Yep. It stinks, and puts everyone in a tough position. If Clowney sat out the year, it could raise issues as to whether or not he could shake off the rust. If he plays, he could suffer an injury.

They really need to revisit the rule about leaving early. I look at a guy like Todd Gurley, a true sophomore from Georgia. The guy is ready to play in the NFL, he is the best rb in college football, as far as NFL prospect. He is a tough, physical runner with speed. And he has to come back another year. Stupid.

That rule is bargained, correct? Meaning that changing it only hurts veterans even more.

I'm not saying they should or shouldn't change it because I have no skin in the game. But there are very few players that are seriously ready to go (and by that I mean high draft picks) before 3 years out.

If you changed it, you would help 2-3 guys a year and you have 25 other guys that declare early and end up in no mans land.

Part of being a great player is staying on the field. If the NFL thinks you are afraid to play (not that he is afraid but if he is only concerned about his future value) that can't bode well for you.

If I was Clowney, I wouldn't play if I had a hangnail. I would literally use every excuse possible not to get on the field. He can only take so many chop blocks before he needs a walker, so he might as well get paid to have 300 pounders throwing themselves at his knees.

Not sure I disagree. If that drops him into the 2nd round? So be it. The key is making it through the first deal so you can get paid on the 2nd one anyway.

Is he overrated? No not in the slightest. Is he clearly protecting himself for the NFL? Absolutely and with the hypocrisy of the Ncaa good for him!

Ten years from now Clowney will be considered a trailblazer. Players who are guaranteed top ten picks but aren't draft eligible will sit out and start working with fitness/specialist coaches until they're eligible.

They'll say NCAA.

I'm kinda surprised it's taken this long.
