OT: Iowa giving away 5 free rides

University of Iowa giving 5 lucky random students free tuition for 2014-2015 school year in raffle of season ticket purchasers. There also some nice consolation prizes. Not a bad incentive.

Obviously spending $175 for a shot at $8k in tuition is somewhat of a no-brainer.

I wonder how much things like this help. It's only a no-brainer if you were highly likely to buy the tickets anyway. If they have 10,000 student season ticket holders then betting $175 for a 1 in 2000 chance of winning $8,000 is still a very long shot with a relatively small return for the odds. Now if you were leaning toward getting the tickets because they have significant value to you but hadn't taken the leap the added kicker of the tuition lottery ticket might push you over the edge. How many in that situation are still out there with the season starting in a handful of weeks?
