Could we suggest putting Yarin Hasson’s jersey next to it?

Pretty low standards at Illinois it seems. Only played there 2 years with the highlight being the infamous Elite 8 shellacking and he was only a Third team All-American.

.-.
On their website, they do have a list of criteria where somebody has to meet at least 1 of them to be eligible - NPOY, Basketball HoF, B10 POY, 1st or 2nd team All American, Illinois All-Century, and "Individual whose pioneering efforts made a significant impact on Illinois and international basketball"

But a few quotes from their AD in a 247 article.. long story short they are making an exception to the criteria because the AD assumes that he would have been a 1st or 2nd team All American if the legal issues didn't happen

"Obviously, (Shannon) doesn't meet the objective criteria that we have outlined for consideration for the jersey program, but I think we all recognize that without question that he was one of the top 10 players in America this year — probably one of the top two or three players in America"

"He had one of the greatest single seasons in the history of Illinois basketball. Arguably, the greatest season in the history of Illinois basketball. We all understand now that there were factors beyond his control that prevented those votes from being where they needed to be in order for him to satisfy the criteria, and we're happy to make an exception in this case to recognize one of the great players that this program has ever seen. Certainly, I think that's very appropriate and look forward to welcoming him back at an appropriate time to celebrate him in front of our 15,500 fans and to elevate that jersey into the rafters."

Classy move by the AD

Pretty low standard for retirement IMO
I guess he’s their Bart Starr lol

Oh wait Starr won championships

So I guess he’s their… Phillip Rivers? Wait he got to the semis at least.

So he’s their… Mark Brunell? Someone help me here please

Eh, he was better than a third team guy. I would have taken him over RJ Davis. 23 points on 14.4 attempts isn’t bad. Put him against anybody but last year’s team in that elite 8, and he looks pretty incredible. He was the most exciting player to watch from another program.

Wow that is embarrassing
As embarrassing as you leading chants against the kid? If you would just read why Illinois is doing this it's because Shannon was unfairly put through the ringer all season by fans like yourself and by voters. It was all gross, I'm glad he's going to be honored.

Not taking a shot at him but where is he now? He certainly looked like a player until he met Steph Castle but he was not the only one to look not so good vs Steph.

.-.
It's an Illinois decision, he deserves to be rewarded for playing through the wringer like @St John had alluded to. It's a moment for Shannon Jr and the fans to have their moment. Credit to Illinois for doing the right thing. Who's really gonna wear #0 anyways.

To be fair, Castle made Curry look like just another guy.

Maybe wait for actual facts to come out before jumping to conclusions and running with a narrative?

You wouldn’t chant against an opposing team’s best player when we shut them down after their team was blatantly disrespectful to us, and the opposing fans were feeling themselves early? Good for you, tweetums. How was the view from home?

And yeah it’s still embarrassing to retire someone’s number over some off-the-court trials and tribulations like he’s Jackie Robinson. But hey, that’s where Illinois is as a program. They don’t have to be embarrassed for themselves; I’ll do that for them

You guys must remember our program is unique and incomparable to others.

This is a tremendous thing Illinois is doing. It's not unlike anything UMass or Stony Brook would do.

We just do things differently in Storrs. Y'all stop hating.

Drafted late 1st round to the Timberwolves. Gets limited minutes because the Minnesota backcourt is stacked (Conley/Ant/Divincenzo/Dillingham gets some minutes) . Did play 2 G League games, averaging 33 points on 47/40/93

It's wild you would still even want to touch this topic and that you seem to be doubling down.

Nobody is saying he's Jackie Robinson. The kid was screwed over by a rush to judgement from fans like yourself, people in the media, and by voters.

You brought this up, dummy; and I’m not sure where I’m doubling down on anything. All I ever thought was dumb about the number retirement was the fact that he got blasted in the elite eight. Regardless of accolades, I personally find that retiring his jersey, as a UConn fan, to be on the embarrassing side. That’s why I’m making jokes about him being Mark Brunell.

But you’re just mad at me and rushed to judgment.

Literally who cares. Not our team, has nothing to do with us. Should just be happy for the kid and move on.

To be clear, Shannon's number is not being retired, it's just being honored. This is like the Huskies of Honor for UConn
