I found this discussion very enlightening. I am so naive to the game, was blind but now I see. Not sure if all this is true but its believable. It really addresses middle school activity. The discussion is long:

It used to happen in football all the time, it happened mainly down south, so only a matter of time before kids in bballa nd up north began doing it too.

By the way, this isn't limited to sports. Many upper income families have their kids begin kindergarten closer to 6, while a lot of very lower income families have their kids start school at closer to 4 (free babysitting).
