Last night, outfielder Alex Lavine pinch-hit and played an inning in the field for Arizona Softball.
This was 7 weeks after she tore her ACL (and miniscus). She explained that she postponed her surgery until after the season, opting to have her knee drained, rehabbing and playing with a brace. Her reason was that she is a senior and was unlikely to be granted a medical red-shirt.
I thought this is the sort of thing that highlights the best of college athletics and what they mean to participants, particularly players that are not going on to pro careers. And yes, she was medically cleared to play, she can't do any more damage, so she was one of the lucky ones that could do this.
Tremendous applause for her.
