It is far more complicated than to say that. I actually agree that, in general, she "knows how to coach". But did she have problems because she wasn't able to recruit players that responded to her coaching style? Or did she misjudge what the players were capable of doing? I have no idea, but it is a little more complicated than knowing how to coach.

I think part of it is having the right staff around you - I've never thought Brenda Friese was a game planning genius, but she has had assistants that are really good at that sort of thing. As always, part of it is having the right players, both bringing what you need to the table, but also being responsive to your coaching. I always thought that part of former RU Assistant Carlene Mitchell's issues at UCSB - and I saw them play against UofA her last year there (and had a chance to speak with her) - was that the players were not up to the expectations (in terms of executing a game plan) that she had of them.

I think the player issue is just not being able to get enough talent through the door at Hartford.
 
She can recruit if she had a fair sized budget to do so. All of her recruits are from the NE, mostly regional and Fairfax, VA is the furthest away. Her budget does not allow her to cast a net far and wide. The competition is fierce and D1 players from the Northeast are almost as rare as golfers.

The top players have their pick of top 25 teams and Jen is left with crumbs.

Even Geno can't find players from the area except walk-on.

Jen should have been able to do better, I will admit she did have some good years.
I still a little surprised she could keep local talent around, don't know if it was her or the possible recruits.

Big Time name like Rizzotti you'd think they'd be flocking to UHart, but they did in her UHart prime I guess

Can't use UConn and Geno as a model for success that can be attainable by every coach. Geno himself atmitted that if Kerry Bascomb didn't agree to come to Connecticut he would have been long gone when his contract expired.

So, Geno's situation is unique, not the norm. There is only one Gino.
His success is really really really deserved.

Anyone can replace Geno (yea, nitpicker), but to accomplish what he did, never. We would be happy with 1/11 of his championships.

Sooner or later that package would have to be unbundled I would think. The coach part, not the rest.

Dang, it's snowing! Strange spring in the Rockies. My internet is through satellite dish system and it gets pretty balky in these conditions.

Have you ever been to UHart? (Serious question, not being snarky)

There is NO comparison between the potential of the land grant flagship state school (at any one of its incantations) and UHart. The latter is meh, meh, meh - at best.

I don't follow UHart at all anymore but seem to vaguely recall some key injuries impacting team performance. Not sure how recent that is.

I'm not sure how big time the Rizzotti name is outside of Connecticut these days. She can coach but that early momentum is gone, never to return as long she is at UHar.
This would be a great move for her.

And I always got the feeling UHar has a way too inflated sense of their position in the college sports landscape. They don't have one.

I remember their AD being incredibly dismissive of the idea of Karl Hobbs getting their head coaching gig back in the day. Nobody has ever won at that dumpster fire, even when they had an NBA allstar on the roster. Having said that, there is no reason I can think of that it shouldn't dominate its conference (in women's hoops), as that is who it's recruiting against.

yeah I've been there during her haydays with Danielle Hood, Diane Delva, Tanika Price, Ettienne, Erica Beverly, Ikea Witt, Erika Messam, Daphne Elliott.
I was actually a season ticket holder for a few years around 2005-2010

it was good basketball, of course a step down from the UConn style

Rizz made the tourney a few times, you'd think that would keep a few mid-level talent players coming... maybe the rest of the league better (shrugs)

Close, actually she badmouthed Hobbs to anyone who would listen when he turned the job down. Real class. But I will never forgive them for their part in gaslighting UConn over the APR.
 
Also note that the Providence job is open and Jen surely could've had that. Only 2 hours away, Catholic, Providence & burbs similar size to Hart, familiar school, slightly better conference. In an ideal world, I bet she would've preferred that job. But this just shows that GW is a much better program than Prov, and has more institutional support.
 
Congrats to Jen!

GW is a good school, a major university located near the White House, World Bank, and IMF and just a stone's through from Georgetown.

There is very good talent in the DC area. Notables include Jamelle Elliott, Kara Lawson, Kaili McLaren, Jasmine Thomas, Lynetta Kizer, Jonquel Jones, Natalie Butler, De'Janae Boykin, Marta Sniezek, and Kaila Charles. If Jen can get some local talent and a few others, she should do well.
