Use a roof rake as soon as possible before it turns into block ice for the first 1 to 2 feet back from the gutters after any storm of over 6”. I learned that the hard way living in NH. Got water everywhere. I can get to just about my entire house except for the spot over my basement garage as it is 3 stories up instead of 2. Have not had a problem so far (knock on wood).

My front door was frozen shut because of the ice melt and refreeze on my gutters. First time that's ever happened. So this topic has my interest.

I have heated gutters; however, they have these seams, some of which leak. I don't think gutters are supposed to have seams. So no matter how cold it is, the gutter melts the snow, and it just drips, slow drip, but after awhile it becomes a lake of frozen ice on the walkway. Nice huh? Anything work to patch the leak?

Well I used some flex seal on gutters on a rental property in a problem area and I did work. Flex seal is that infomercial stuff where the guy turns the pick up into a boat.

Well this morning I heard a crackling sound, went outside and half the gutters in the front of my house are down. Had a guy coming today to rake the roof: too little, too late. It is my own fault for procrastinating. Sometimes New England really sucks.
For those who want to fix minor leaks, there is a product called Marine-Tex which is only sold in marine stores as far as I know. It works great.

I was on a ladder breaking up more than 12" of ice off a roof where three angles off the roof come together to form a big funnel and with weather in Upstate NY routinely below zero, it's been a real pain in the hind end. I should have snapped a pic of it the ice, it was pretty impressive. I'll have to reseal the gutters early spring as I observed where the ice had started to compromise the caulk....fun stuff. Plus, I took a huge chuck of ice off the noggin and have a welt that looks like I got clocked in the head by a beer bottle.

I remember the winter of 1995/96. My old man worked for the CT DOT that winter and with all of the snow in CT, could not make it to our old lake house in the Adirondacks. So, I drove-up from Storrs for President's weekend. That Sunday, I spent 6 hours shoveling 6 feet of snow off our 1,200 sq ft camp. It was a nightmare, especially as it was like a cake with a foot or two of snow and then a 1/2 inch of ice on top followed by another foot or two and then more ice.

I worked for a company many years ago that had a factory in upstate NY (Amsterdam). I noticed that a lot of the homes had roofs with metal edges of about 6-12". I guess the metal is supposed to help the snow and ice slide off the roof. Are you familiar with this?
Glad you are ok.

Saw this a lot in Vermont, flashing the last 2 feet along the edge of the roof. This was before the water and ice barrier product came to pass. This definitely works but you don't see it much in CT.

I'm a bit northeast of Amsterdam and I'm familiar with those edges, I'll end up doing something when I get sick of spending time each a winter dealing with this rubbish. The only issue is where the three roof angles come together, the rest of the house is pretty darn good. Although one level of the roof is about 30' up and I'm not getting on there to check it even with a 4' snow cushion to break my fall which is inevitable. Good things is that there isn't a ton of icicles off that high roof so I'm pretty confident that we're good there.

Only works if you don't have gutters....don't think I've seen a house in Vt with gutters because of the snow/ice...my ski place has the metal flashing...works for a while but with a season like this...still have ice...

Hope everybody with gutter/roof/ice issues took advantage of that short, but solid thaw we just had because temperatures are going to dive way down again starting tomorrow and stay there for at least a week to 10 days. We're talking polar vortex 3.0 and 20 degree below normal temps... Ugh.

The front side of my house gets pretty good sun exposure so the snow and ice retreated away from the gutter naturally on that side. The back side is a whole different story with a lot of big trees blocking the sun, so ice dams tend to build up there.

I busted out the roof rake multiple times this weekend to slowly (and painfully) work on the ice and snow while temps were mild. Finally had a break through today when I went out there after the UConn loss and dislodged a bunch of huge chunks of ice off most of the back side. Now I just need to make sure to not be lazy and roof rake right after every snow storm. Spring can't come soon enough.
