OT: Greatest Coach Ever. Alex Ferguson?

In today's NY Times, Alex Ferguson is nominated as "the greatest coach ever" on the occasion of his retirement from soccer. Many other coaches (mostly American) are discussed as possible challengers to the mythical and subjunctive title conferred on Sir Alex.

Some of the nominations were amazing and some were ridiculous. Wooden, Summitt and Lombardi were among those mentioned only in passing. Anson Dorrence, Robert Kiphuth, Dan Gable and Red Auerbach were not mentioned at all. The father of Serena and Venus was lauded but some amazing coaches of women's teams (e.g., lacrosse, volleyball), including Geno, were not even mentioned.

Still, an interesting read. Someone please link it.

Though I despise him, a good case can be made for him. First parts of the article are good. Then when people (don't know who these people are) "nominate" their own, it gets kinda far fetched with HS, Div III coaches, individual vs team coaches.

these arguments always seem stupid to me. How can you judge one sports coach vs another? That being said Geno not getting the same respect Pat gets is both ridiculous and not surprising. I guess if you are looking at just what they have meant to the game (Pat is more influential) but on record Geno is going to be better (if he isn’t already) .
