8. In 19th century France, an army officer named Dreyfus, who was Jewish, was wrongly accused of treason and was court-marshaled, convicted and sent to Devil's Island. The author Emile Zola rose to Dreyfus's defense by writing a stirring article titled J'Accuse which accused the military of antisemitism. Zola was convicted of libel, but his article resulted in the release of new evidence that led to Dreyfus's exoneration.
9. It was in the newspaper a couple of days ago: Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New Mexico and Montana.

2.. Plaisere d'amoure

3.. quiet desperation; H D Thoreau

8.. A treasonous letter was discovered, written by some French officer. Cpt Deyfus, a Jew, was deliberately framed by the army high command. Emile Zola blew it up with a newspaper campaign; "J'accuse", Dreyfuss was exonerated and the real culprit unmasked, a very well-connected member of the hereditary aristocracy.

13. Turkey. I have been following the story, and it is getting really nasty. But Gulen is not really "offering an alternative"; it is much more complicated than that.
