5. Stanford White was shot by Harry Thaw at the original Madison Square Garden when Thaw became jealous over White's previous affair with Thaw's beautiful young wife, Evelyn Nesbitt. I believe the shooting took place in the 1890s, but I may be off on that. It was one of the most sensational crimes of its time and was portrayed in the 1950s movie "The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing."
