3. I'll say Fremont also, I remember the slogan, although it just doesn't feel right. By 1856 he was a Republican, that's for sure.
5. Mercury?
8. The echo of blood moving around in your eardrum.

Rust by definition is the deposits on a ferrous metal caused by oxidation.

So the correct answer would be all non ferrous metals. Pick any one of many. Include alloys and the list expands exponentially. The easy ones are the precious metals.

If you meant a metal that doesn't corrode then the list would be smaller but there is a reason there is a group of metals called precious.

Even among precious metals there is one that stands out for being eternal in form.

2..Let's narrow this down--in which state?

3..Not Fremont...and this guy was a winner.

4..Guess again.

7..Frank, you are in the right church, but not all deserts qualify. They need a specific feature.

9..Especially made famous in THE THREE TENORS concerts, sung by Placido. Extra hint: it translates as, "Can't be!"

10..79% is not far off, but still modest.

12..VAUC provides an impressive fruit salad...yet there is a conspicuos absence.

5. Post-your definition, I'd like to change to platinum because it has low reactivity. I was thinking galvanization of steel for zinc.
7. Hills in the desert?

1..Frank & our 2 V's. with Uganda, as in the loneliness of the long distance runner. Hmm...somebody said that.

2..Cal leads in gross deaths; Fl in % of pop. Which is why I NEVER go out.

3..No posters pick Martin Van Buren...more loneliness.

4..Asjha is 8/3 and STILL not half my age.

5..The stuff that's in them thar hills.

6..VTC emerges from the peanut gallery (some of you will not remember that) to pick the most smokeless of the genre.

7..Frank says desert hill; more exotic to say a sizable sand dune--esp. in Sahara-like places.

9..I could have sworn that Rbny plays these quizzes.

8..Knights zeroes in on the ol' surging blood trick.

10..Way high at 90%.

11..VAUC is most precise with swine flu

12..Pheew, after rattling around the produce section, pinot saves the day by squeezing the avocado.

13..Mickey Mouse (Donald Duck!), Mickey Mouse (no, Donald Duck!), forever let us hold our banner high.
OK, back to earth, I give credit to arne & VTC. K9 would have known, if she were not scouring the neighborhood
for lost doggies.

#5 - There are dozens of metals that do not rust. Gold is but one of them. I'll name a few - platinum, silver, titanium, copper, aluminum, zinc, lead, nickel and so on.

The question and answer would have been correct had you asked for a metal that doesn't corrode. Rust is limited to ferrous metals and is a product related to oxidation. Corrosion is the term used for metals that are damaged by other chemical reactions. Most precious metals are corrosion resistant.

In that case there would be fewer candidates and gold would be near the top but if I remember correctly platinum is even more corrosion resistant than gold.

It was overly facile on my part to lump "rust" and "corrode" together. I vow to never do it again.
