If it is Little Richard and Tutti Frutti, I would hardly call the song do wop. It is about as hard rocking as you can get.

Ruffian, there are 2 ways to look at doo-wop. One, as you imply, is confined to the singing groups, often in ballads.
the second is to see it as a rock and roll era, from 1954 roughly to the advent of the Beach Boys & Beatles.

I agree and so does my live-in musicologist. Upink says gospel, jump blues, and rock n' roll, but no doo wop for Little Richard. Tutti Frutti may begin with nonsnsical doo wop syllables but it is a rock n' roll song. Now Ray Pollard is Doo Wop through and through.

OK, it would be stubborn of me not to admit I could have phrased the question better. While my wording at least did not seem to throw you off, "An early R&R song" or "A song from the doo wop era", would have been superior.
