Wire Chief's niqab question made me curious. Below is the result of curiosity.

To Niqab or Not to Niqab

COUNTRY

LAWS, CUSTOMS, CULTURE, FASHION, ETC.

Afghanistan

Officially no longer required, however, there remains intense social pressure to wear the burqa. The burqa includes the niqab.

Albania

Albania has introduced draft legislation to ban the hijab in public schools. Additionally, use of the hijab is very uncommon in Albania.

Australia

I believe the Australians banned all religious expressions in all schools. The police have the power to demand the removal of burkas and other veils.

Bangladesh

Is neither encouraged nor discouraged by the government.

Belgium

Belgium became the second European country to ban the burqa.

Canada

No laws prohibiting the niqab. A bill to outlaw the niqab was tabled. Interestingly the Muslim Canadian Congress identifies them as oppressive to women as well as interfering with communication and presenting a safety issue. On the other hand, the Canadian Islamic Congress criticized a proposed law that would have required all voters to show their faces before being allowed to cast ballots.

Cyprus

No niqab. However, traditionally the women have always worn a headscarf of some sorts. Again I think this is more cultural and style thing and not religious. Both Orthodox Christian Greek and Muslim Turkish Cypriot women wear headscarves.

Denmark

There is currently no ban on religious Islamic dress in Denmark.

Egypt

Some restrictions of wearing the hijab by the government of which it views hijab as a political symbol. The hijab covers everything except the hands and face. They did ban the niqab from exams for obvious reasons.

France

Not only the niqab but the burqa as well.

Gambia

Allowed.

Germany

No federal laws banning the niqab, but there is debate. However, several states ban wearing of headscarves by female teachers and have restricts on wearing the hijab in general. However, Catholic nuns are allowed to wear their religious garb.

Indonesia

Equal State protection for five state-sanctioned religions (namely Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism and Hinduism). No laws encouraging or limiting the use the niqab.

Iran

After the revolution, the maghna'eh has been transformed from a private sign of piety into a compulsory Islamic dress that must be worn by women and girls in nurseries, schools, universities, workplaces, government buildings, cinemas and other public places. However unlike the niqab, the maghna'eh allows the entire face to be seen.

Israel

A member of the current Knesset is proposing a law that would prohibit the wearing of any garment that obscures the face and prevents identification, in any government office, at any entertainment venue, and on any means of public transportation. I found the following interesting. “In July 2010, some Israeli lawmakers and women’s rights activists proposed a bill to the Knesset banning face-covering veils. According to the Jerusalem Post, the measure is generally "regarded as highly unlikely to become law." Hanna Kehat, founder of the Jewish women’s rights group Kolech, criticized a ban and also commented "fashion also often oppresses women with norms which lead to anorexia." Eilat Maoz, general coordinator for the Coalition of Women for Peace, referred to a ban as "a joke" that would constitute "racism".”

To Niqab or Not to Niqab

COUNTRY

LAWS, CUSTOMS, CULTURE, FASHION, ETC.

Italy
No laws prohibiting the niqab. Islam is the second largest religion in Italy. The Islamic veil has become a national political issue. An Italian parliamentary commission approved a draft law banning veils in public.
Jordan
There are no laws requiring the wearing of headscarves nor any banning of such from any public institution.
Kosovo
The government of Kosovo banned the headscarf in schools.
Kuwait
Kuwaiti women have the freedom to choose whether or not to wear the hijab. It is not mandatory for the women to wear it, and many do not.
Lebanon
Lebanon is a religiously diverse country. There are no laws encouraging or discouraging the use of a niqab. Women have the freedom to choose.

Malaysia
The headscarf is known as a tudungis used by women. However, personally I think it is quite stylish and not religious looking at all. Perhaps there are a range of tudungs for the stylish to the religious. Although headscarves are permitted in government institutions, public servants are forbidden from wearing the full-face niqab. A judgment from the then-Supreme Court of Malaysia cites that the niqab, or purdah, "has nothing to do with (a woman's) constitutional right to profess and practise her Muslim religion", because Islam does not make it obligatory to cover the face.

Mexico
There is no ban on any of the Muslim clothing items.

Netherlands
Not only the niqab but the burqa as well.

Norway
There is currently no ban on Islamic dress.

Pakistan
Pakistan has no laws banning or enforcing the ħijāb and presumably the niqab.

Palestinian territories
The laws have no meaning here. Groups such Hamas and The Swords of Truth have verbally and physically harassed women into wearing traditional Islamic garb. Female TV broadcasts have been threatened with beheading if they do not wear a veil.

Saudi Arabia
It appears the niqab is de rigueur.

Somalia
He niqab is not encouraged or discouraged. Generally a woman face is uncovered. Somali women usually wear the guntiino, a long stretch of cloth tied over the shoulder and draped around the waist. Married women tend to sport head-scarves referred to as shash, and also often cover their upper body with a shawl known as garbasaar.

Spain
The Spanish government allows their local councils to regulate the dress code of their Muslim women citizens by banning the use of the Burqa and full-face veils in all non-religious places or events, and any other garment that hides the face. Spanish resort island of Mallorca has banned women from wearing burqas.

Sweden
The wearing of Islamic dress is permitted.

Syria
Required everywhere but in universities. However, recently Syria’s ruling Ba’ath Party denounced niqab-wearing at a recent conference. An education ministry official argued the niqab was “against academic principles” as well as “campus regulations.”

Tunisia
Tunisian authorities are encouraging women to "wear modest dress in line with Tunisian traditions" i.e. no headscarf. In Women with headscarves are banned in schools and government buildings. The government launched a campaign against the hijab, banning it in some public places. The government described the headscarf as a sectarian form of dress which came uninvited to their country.

Turkey
Turkey is officially a secular state, and the hijab is banned in universities and public buildings – this includes libraries or government buildings. The ban has been highly controversial. At one point the conservative party led parliament allowed headscarves in universities. However, the Constitutional Court of Turkey reinstated the ban at universities. (I find this interesting since in Syria the headscarf is banned form universities since it is not acceptable to Syria educational ideals.)

United Kingdom
There is currently no ban on Islamic dress.

United States of America
There is no ban on any of the Muslim clothing items. There cannot be such a ban in the USA, since the 1st Amendment protects freedom of speech including clothing. Several Supreme Court cases have upheld this.

25. Let It Be was the last one released but it was recorded almost a year before Abbey Road. Let It Be was such a sad, dark album that George Martin prodded the fabulous foursome back into the studio to record another more upbeat album. Without anything being said, they all pretty much knew that it had all come to an end. SNL, myself, and the entire music loving universe held out hope for a reunion. That hope, of course, was dashed on Central Park West at the hands of Mark David Chapman.

WC- If you have library overdue problems it's time to modernize. Like newspapers libraries as we kinow them are soon to be a thing of the past. I read not too long ago that more e-books are sold than paper copies. Just last week I read that there are 11,000 libraries now offering e-books on line.
