Good match between Serena and Azarenka! I hate when Serena starts out so slowwww! The match also had some good drama in the 2nd set. I think Stephens will give Serena a run for her money in the round of 16!

I think Serena is gonna run Stephens right off the court. I love watching Serena in the Grand Slams... but its hard for me to watch a match with Azarenka. She makes entirely too much noise.

I sure hope Serena does Triad! If you cant handle Azarenka, I know you can't watch Sharapova! Lol

Lucie Safarova, the 13th ranked Czech, has taken set 1 from Maria. It was announced that Maria is 0-3 in
tie breakers this year. Lucie has been in many more, but is about 40%. Maria is now 0-4, losing set one 7-3.

One break in the 2nd set has Maria down 0-3.

Expect Monfils & Federer to resume right after this match, 1-1 in sets from last night.

Well now, Lucie's in the sky with diamonds!...in straight sets, 6-4.

Meanwhile Andy Murray has just begun vs. the home town favorite Jeremy Chardy.

Federer having a tough time with Monfils. Don't think he'll win another Grand Slam.

Sloane is trying to do to Serena what she already did to big sister. Serena is just sluggish in losing the first set 6-1.

.-.
interesting

Did Serena just break Sloane in the 3rd? I see it's 3-2 and it looks like Serena is serving but I'm not sure if I'm reading the Courtcast correctly...

OK, 4-2 now and the little arrow is by Sloane's name, so I must have read it correctly.

Go Serena! But I wouldn't mind Sloane getting the break back and making this an epic 3rd set :) with Serena prevailing...

OK - no epic 3rd .... .lol

Serena is on to the next round. Did she just start hitting winners or did Sloane get loose with her shots? Or both?

Gotta give Sloane credit. She burst onto the scene a few years ago and then has been forgettable since - the reason she's not seeded in the French Open. But if she puts together more consistent performances like she did at Roland Garros this year, maybe she will come closer to reaching her potential...

Monfils is a tremendous athlete that can perform at an incredibly high level but typically for short periods of time, so do discount this win by Fed. He is playing very well at the net, which bodes well for Wimbledon and the US Open.

It's quarterfinals day and the men are showing continuity. Yesterday's 5 matches produced winners all in the top 10.
The women are more volatile, with Serena, of course #1. But after her are seeds #13, 17, 21, 23, and 1 unranked.
Because Rafa is only #6 this year, tomorrow we get him vs. Novak Holy Smokes!

What a shame that this could not be in a later round. This is one of the best quarterfinal matchups in majors history.

I hope Novak blows Rafa off the court.

Looks like Wawrinka might be on course to oust Federer - He's up 2 sets to 0 but on serve in the 3rd. Same for Tsonga - up 2-0 on Kei - but on serve in the 3rd. Could be an exciting day for the underdogs, as well as for the home-guy (Tsonga)...

Wow. Roger is out. Stan beat him in straight sets but the 3rd went to a tiebreaker. Great win for Stan - I really like both those guys so it was hard to root for one or the other. Would like to see Tsonga upset Nishikori - when was the last time a local guy won the French? Murray finally did it for Britain a few years back at Wimbledon...

1983 Yannick Noah.

1983 Yannick Noah.

I remember that final. And the hair :)

Henri Leconte(sp?) was another pretty good French player on the men's side back then. IIRC he made a few grand slam semis but did not close the deal. Very passionate player; wore his heart on his sleeve.

Italiana Sara Errani, a good clay courter at #17, takes on Serena at 8am EST.
Then it's Rafa vs. Novak

Errani is loud... Serena up a set tied at 3 in the second

Errani does not have a game that matches up well with Serena. Players like her, Suarez Navarro, Pennata, etc who have a lot of spin, angles, lobs, etc but not a lot of power are not a good matchup at all vs. Serena.

Serena, of course, is the heavy favorite, but my dark horse is Lucy Safarova. She is a very quick defender and her footwork is wonderful. Many points I just watch her 100% of the point. She is ballerina like. She also has sneaky power (unlike defenders-Errani, Pennata, Wozniaki, etc.) and has the deception of a lefty. Another advantage is she has played BIG hitters --Sharapova, Mugaruza, and now Ivanavic (she has to beat her yet), so she will be used to the power of Serena. Let's see what happens.

Also Safarova is in the finals with Bethany Mattek-Sands for the doubles (or maybe it's the semi's). They just beat the top seed Hingas/Mirza to advance. My point is Safarova must be comfortable at the net too. Not that clay court tennis lends itself to playing at the net, and not like Serena hits a lot of short balls, but she's a really solid player with an all court game. Would be an interesting matchup (do they face each other in the semis?)...

Plus I meant to say Errani has a weird serve. The way she holes her racket when the ball is tossed up - she didn't used to serve that way did she? What changed? usually when a player changes their motion like she did it's because they have trouble with double faults, but her serve is so soft I can't imagine she'd have trouble with that...

BTW Nadal went out pretty easily. Unranked Kokinakis gave Novak a better match in the 3rd round. Nadal had a good draw for him until he ran into Novak, but I have a feeling there are about 8-10 guys who could beat him on any given day these days. Federer's decline has been slow - he's still a top 3-4 guy, but Rafa may drop out of the top 10 if Tsonga beats Wawrinka...

I have the BIGGEST crush on Nadal....I hope he doesn't fade....he was my shining light at the French Open all those years Serena wasn't winning it!

I actually think Novak is much more sexy. But of course, Verdasco and Tipsarevic are even better...
