>>Virginia Tech failed to come away with a win on Saturday at East Carolina, but Hokies head coach Frank Beamerhad an interesting take on the game. After the loss, dropping the Hokies to 2-2 this season, Beamer said games against teams like East Carolina are nothing more than preseason or exhibition games. Only the games against ACC opponents, apparently, count in the eyes of Beamer.

#Hokies Beamer:"They’re exhibition games, they’re preseason games. Now it’s on to conference games. Now it’s down to being really important” — Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) September 27, 2015
Now, we can probably give Beamer a mild pass for being upset that his team lost a game. The heat of the moment after a tough loss can leave some to say some things they do not truly mean, and odds are Beamer would express this thought a bit differently any other time. But just as that quote reads after a loss comes across as sour grapes for Beamer.

Beamer’s quote does reveal a truth. Power conference schools scheduling games against teams from the Group of Five or FCS have always generally been perceived as tune-up games. With no college football preseason games like in the NFL, power conference programs scheduling games against conferences like the American Athletic Conference can be viewed as preseason games. Of course, the American is a bad example here. East Carolina now has a victory over an ACC school. So does Houston (Louisville). Temple also has a win over a Big Ten school (Penn State).<<

College football has changed in that the goal now is really to win your conference. Do that, and you have a shot at something bigger. Hell, last years champion lost to him and if that doesn't prove that a loss can't kill you, then nothing does. Now I don't think he has a very good team and he is probably upset about losing, but I think I understand what he was trying to say. If by some chance he were to win his league, or even play for the championship of it and then win his bowl game, then no one would probably even care that they lost to ECU.

Didn't read it that way. He's saying the games against teams not acc don't count

There were better ways to make his point, and a coach of his stature should know that. Although, frankly, VT isn't exactly the classiest of programs.

From my perspective, the P5 coaches foster the perception of this huge gap between the power conferences and a conference like the AAC. Fact of the matter is, there isn't all that much of a gap once you get past the very best of the P5. Well over half the ACC don't come out of ECU with a W.

Correct. The only goal is to win your conference.

But losing games in September hurts the perception of your conference and the perception of your team when bowls are looking at you. September losses don't come without negatives.

Did he say the same thing when they lost to James Madison at home in 2010?

(Probably, because they ended up winning a very weak ACC and playing in the Orange Bowl.)

I don't think it's a shot at ECU either. I mean, he is saying that all OOC games are preseason. That means their opening game against Ohio State was as useless as their ECU game.

So if you follow Beamer's logic, UCF's 52-42 victory over #6 Baylor in the 2014 Fiesta bowl was an exhibition bowl. Sorry coach you got beat by ECU two years in a row. Not buying your bull.

Those of us who have followed the demise of the Big East, the theat of becoming totally irrelevent and the delicate building of the Amercan take exception to Beamer's thoughtless remark. True UCONN fans who have been through the heart ache heard loud and clear. WE LOVE IT WHEN ANY G5 beats a P5! Beamer's comment was not only a continuance of ESPN propaganda it was insulting to the coaching staff, players and fans of ECU and the entire American Athletic Conference, who can pretty much go toe to toe with the ACC.

I hope they go undefeated the rest of the way and get left out of the playoffs. ACC tools.

Exactly! Too bad he didn't beat Ohio State because this loss would neutralize any momentum VT may have gotten......IF VT could have beaten The Ohio State.

At one time many considered Beamer a class act. Now its more than sour grapes.........he's becoming a "lemon". Too bad he doesn't have ambitions for a higher coaching level, losses to exhibition teams would certainly eliminate him from consideration.

His teams of late have not been consistently good as they were in the BE.

Two losses is like "Strike Three.....you're out!"

Better concentrate on his in conference Exhibition Games.....Duke and Wake Forest.......by God, those are quality wins! ...IF he wins.....

All bowl games with no effect on the College Playoff are exhibitions, but here's the thing: They still count on your record, just like OOC games.

This comment from a VA tech fan says it all (There were many similar to this one)

'WOW.... that is all I have to say. If thats how he really feels about non-conference games, then its time for him to go. Non-conference games are meant to showcase your team and conference to the national media. You want exhibition/preseason games, go schedule creampuff U. I can't help but be pissed after reading that. Anybody that thinks Beamer is still the man to lead us is just as lost as he is."

I used to work with a close friend who was a VT Football student manager. Said everyone loved Beamer for all he's done down there, he did basically build that program out of nothing. It has gotten a bit awkward he's becoming a senile old man. I don't think he listens to his assistants, nor the administration. They would love for him to resign on his own terms, but don't know if that will happen. It might be similar to how Bowden left FSU. Still they should have made Bud Foster the head coach years ago. I'm really surprised hes stuck around so long.

I really hope that another JoePa scandal doesn't emerge out of VT years down the road. A senile aging old man who the game has completely left behind won't relinquish control of the program, thus burying it in a decade of mediocrity. There is no reason that VT can't be ACC contenders every year with their facilities, fanbase and recruiting territory. Yet, they always seem to struggle to win 6-7 games a season (mostly from talent disparity that they have over many other ACC rosters).
