Was this Community Shield game a friendly or does it count in the standings?

Doesn't count... It's the unofficial kickoff to the season, meant to showcase the past years league and fa cup winners, nothing more than bragging rights at stake...

All the major European countries have this. Its basically a fundraising game for charity.

Interestingly enough, a few counties have started taking the match overseas. Its a way to broaden international attention with something on the line to boot (fans in those countries the teams are from do not care about the game at all).

Italy plays theirs at the Bird's Nest in Beijing. France moves theirs will over, this year it was at Red Bull Arena in NJ.

I expect the EPL to do this once they realize Man City-Man Utd would draw 90,000 at MetLife Stadium for a trophy of some repute with players actually trying.

Match gate usually goes towards UK vet organizations, that could be a hangup with the State Dept or something.
