I would hope UConn lobbied the State to ply some concessions from the tribe and/or Horizon in return for approving these projects. I would have called for a small percentage from gaming and or mall revenue to fund/finance the expansion of Rentschler Field. That might allow for a more immediate planning timetable and an un-Jersey like pursuit of stadium expansion without going to taxpayers for deficit funding/bond service, etc. That would not only help us with conference realignment, but a vibrant Rent, filled with 55,000 fans, would substantially benefit both projects.
The casino would be at a renovated movie theather a few blocks from The Rent not on its property. Plus UConn does not own Rentschler, the state does, so this had nothing to do with the university.

What are the chances they turn the field into a dog racing track to attract the true degenerates? Remember the Jai Alai and who that attracted?

Only the Pequots and Mohegans would get a piece of this pie again. Quite sad other tribes in CT don't get "recognized".

I'm aware of both of those facts. I was suggesting that with stadium expansion a seeming requisite of B1G admittance, and the reality of taxpayer reticence to pay for it, UConn could have suggested that the State try and negotiate for these concessions from both projects in an attempt to help the State finance a Rent expansion. In my view that's a win-win-win proposition.

Any money grab like a casino or toll booth needs to be used to reduce income taxes and encourage economic development. I am a big proponent of penny sales taxes, tolls etc. when they will be specifically used to reduce debt and dig a city, state or country out of debt. It is a painless solution that is rarely used and when it is, politicians quickly screw it up.

Wait a minute. I thought Weiker told us his income tax would preclude the need for any other taxes for evermore???

Downtown casino would be awful just like Cleveland's. Until CT fixes its fundamentally awful business climate all a casino will do is help to widen the income gap. Did you see Hartfords latest proposal for a commuter tax? Might as well put a "Closed" sign at the borders.

There are too many leftists in state government. Businesses will continue to leave the state for the foreseeable future.

The income tax was suppose to pay for education - UConn is $26k a year now compared to whatever it was in 1990 with more tuition hikes already approved. I supported the income tax then and now realize it was a mistake that started the economic downdraft.
