I live near Greenville SC in an area you don't expect to see these guys. My neighbor took the photo in his yard with one of those auto movement cameras.

Wow! This picture inspired me to do a little researching. There are persistent accounts of black mountain lions, but a decided lack of verification of the existence of such. My initial reaction is that the cat in the pic looks like a leopard to me. Of course non-native, but exotics are released in various places they don't belong, so not impossible. Jaguars also are known to have all black coloration, but are extremely rare in the U.S. and probably not native to South Carolina at all. Huh.
a.

You never heard of the Carolina Panthers? :p:p:p:p

Poking around on the internet, there are potentially other large cat species in South America that are neither a jaguar or a mountain lion. Also there are persistent accounts of large black cats in places w/ no indigenous species such as England and Australia.

Yes of course a panther....very rare in this area I think it was all over the news a few years ago they were trying to track it down. Not sure what ever happened.

This is why the cat stays indoors only:D

We see a lot in our yard and besides the bear my favorite was a huge owl right came down onto a rock right before dusk..he was beautiful but didn't get the camera in time.

Just throw a cell phone at the Great Horned and it will probably drop the cat. ;)

Yep I live in Travelers Rest so in the foothills. A little rural but not like we are in the mountains or even heavily wooded in this area.

Your right... thats away from the city..... but not THAT far away. Then again... nothing should surprise me, at least when it comes to bears. Usually every couple of summers... there are bears that pass through my city on the way from the mountains to the beach. One showed up at a Mcdonalds on the outskirts of town... people were feeding it Sausage McMuffins and McGriddles :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Another one walked across a college campus and by the parking lot of the biggest church in town.... on a Sunday Morning  Then there was this one..... up in a tree on the side of a busy highway.... caused quite a stir with all the onlookers.

It wasnt me feeding it..... Im not gonna share my food with a bear.... ESPECIALLY not a Sausage McMuffin

I know you're smarter than that triad. I can read. It is amazing how many people know that feeding a beer means ruining it and still they do it.

You'd be amazed how many "nice--supposedly caring--nature lovers---that buy or otherwise obtain a live creature
and then tire of caring for it--now too caring to kill it--dump it on the local environment ==that's why you sometimes see monkeys in trees, wilder cats , snakes of all kind (two or three species I could not determine in my yard) in fish in the great lakes, and everglades---if you can't care for it --find a zoo--if no one else don't dump it--kill it--save the species that live there.

One of my bobcat sightings was in Virginia, in Shenandoah National Park.
Our greatest fear is Coyote's not cats not bears --deer do me more damage--as do rabbits--I share the wealth.
I'm not much into killing--unless to save the local species--it was much easier at 20 than it has been for 40 years.

If you have a bigger problem with deer and rabbits, leave the coyotes alone - they'll help with the excess rabbits and will take the occasional fawn deer. Coyotes are about the only natural predator left in quantity, at least any predator bigger than a bobcat. Otherwise, 'bout the only threat to Bambi is your bumper - that, and starvation due to overpopulation.

Out here in the winter particularly, coyotes will hunt in packs and take down a full size deer; I suspect picking off the weaker member of the herd. When they do a group hunt and make a kill the pack howling, yipping gets pretty wild on the night air.

My old truck left me stranded a few miles off the pavement and about eighteen miles from the nearest cel reception way up in the Uinta Mountains a few years back about thirty minutes after sundown. I hoofed it out and along the way had several nervous packs of coyotes escort me through their territory. I can't say for sure but got the impression that they were a lot more afraid of me than I of them and were worried about the den and their pups. I could hear them yipping and making all kinds of sounds I didn't know they made from both sides of the dirt road and later the highway but never saw one. I was treated to only a few howls but non-stop chatter right up to the edge of civilization. It was quite the performance well worth a few blisters and one very expensive cab fare.

This part of the state, all you see are Bobcats...crazy animals, if you look carefully, you'll be able to see two "zoo keepers" over the score board!

and this guy comes around every week or so. In the summer we sit out on the deck and listen to the pack yapping at the moon.

I live 15 minutes north of the GW Bridge and NYC..........we have black bears, red foxes, coyotes, deer, a variety of hawks and bald eagles right in our backyard which borders a reservoir..........my Golden Retrievers can hang out back there on their own but my little Havanese only goes out when we're outside since a hawk took a Yorkie for lunch down the street over the summer.......

I live in close proximity to one of the reservoirs that supplies water to the City of Baltimore. We have lots of deer, foxes, and the occasional coyote and bear wandering through.
