"For those just getting started"? That's a flat-out lie. I got to 58, "invest in a deep freezer", and almost spit. Nearly gave up after "rent out your extra space or rooms." We have 750 square feet. Nobody I know has room for a chest freezer, very few of us have kids or even a pet (which negates another chunk of their advice), and everyone lives with someone. (We're all 22-30+ years old). Most of this advice is aimed at people who already have the yard and white picket fence and 2.5 kids and the dog, which is not "just starting out". That's "spent too much too fast and racked up credit card debt".
ETA: Also, buying a late model used car from a reputable place costs almost as much as buying new. With less warranty and no guarantee that the previous owner didn't treat it like garbage.
