I've seen a few coyotes in my general area, one as close as two block away last year, but I haven't seen a pack together before yesterday. They were along the Wilbur Cross maybe a half mile or so before the New Haven tunnel on the south side. There were at least three of them that I could see. Bad news near heavily populated areas, especially where kids are out and about. Maybe there are enough deer where they are hanging out to keep them in the woods.

I believe coyotes are supposed to be solitary animals, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore. They hang out in packs and howl at the moon like wolves in central and northern Vermont. Further, anyone who believes this b.s. that coyotes top out at about 40 lbs. hasn't seen many New England coyotes. Those things have to be cross breeding with wolves somewhere along the line. The same can now be said of the massive coyotes being found in South Florida. They are big, tall animals that look a lot more like a coyote/wolf hybrid than a scrawny western coyote.

I've had coyote parents and their young in my yard each spring for several years. The thing is, that they lie along our driveway even when I drove up and don't run away. They only run when I get out. They make me nervous because I have young kids and if they can kill a deer a 35 lb child wouldn't be a problem for them. I never let my kids outside in the yard alone. On the bright side, I haven't seen a chipmunk in my yard since the coyotes.

I agree. They are huge now, pretty much man size, although not very smart.
I've pasted a picture of one of them below:

The good news is they seem to concentrate only on road runners, well that and mail ordering explosives.

Now, that would be a pretty fair trade-off for me. I have come to pretty much hate those cute little chipmunks.

Coyotes are nasty animals. I saw one with a cat in its mouth when I was out for a run the other day. He was pretty proud of himself.

Also, wolves never howl at the moon. They howl to communicate when they cannot see each other. When the moon is full, they can see just fine.

Lord knows there's plenty of deer on the Wilbur Cross / Merritt for those mangy bastards to chew on ...

I live just inside the boarder of a national forest in LA and we have coyotes around all the time. We pretty much hear them outside the fence most nights. In the year and a half we've been here, they've never come inside the fence - not sure if they can actually fit. I'm glad the cat has no interest in traveling outside the fence.

My first coyote sighting was in Haddam 3 years ago. I actually thought it was a german shepard. It was big.

My wife and I just moved to a wooded area and one morning were waken up by a barking pack of the mongrels. I suspect it was a pack of young coyotes barking in excitement over a kill. About 1/2 before that just before retiring for the night I heard 2 coyotes up the road barking and segueing into howls.

At night I always look over my shoulder. They creep me out.

Doesn't that make them exceedingly easy to shoot?

A single coyote won't attack humans so I'm told. A pack of coyotes is another matter. A former neighbor of mine in Portland had a pack going through his yard. He bought a pellet rifle and shot a few of them and never saw them again. The pellet doesn't kill the coyote but I'm sure it hurts like hell.
Saw a show on bears in Alaska and a man had a similar problem. The man shot the bears in the butt with a .22 as they were running away to get rid of them. The .22 doesn't even penetrate the hide but it let the bear know that the man could get to him from a distance.

The animals I saw were not small at all. As we were nearing I thought at first it was deer, but as we passed, clearly coyotes. I think I read once that eastern coyotes do have wolf genes. Agree that there should be plenty of deer along Rt. 15 (also in my back yard but I've not seen coyotes in my yard. I did have a chipmunk that I did battle with last year and finally trapped and relocated.

I pretty much stopped finding chipmunks cute when they dug up our flower bulbs and made their home i our drainage pipes and clogged them up causing flooding. Also, they run out of nowhere when you're doing yardwork and scare the crap out of you. Also, carry deer ticks. The less rodents near me, the better.

The eastern coyote is a western coyote/wolf hybrid, believed to have occurred when the western coyote migrated to Canada north of the Great Lakes region. They are larger than the western coyote, quicker to learn and adapt, and may hunt in groups of two or three. Because of this, they have spread throughout the contiguous US and North America, as high north as Alaska, and as far south as Central America. They are an immediate threat to pets such as dogs and cats and to children. In 2009, I believe, a 19 year old woman was attacked by coyotes and died the next day. She is the first adult to have been killed by coyotes in recorded history. Hope that helps.

Be careful. Once they are not afraid of people they are a problem. They can take down an animal more than ten times their size! As long as you are careful, and feel safe, that is fine. They seem to be afraid of you. That is good. If not, I would alert animal control. At least you've found a solution to your chipmunk problem.:)

I have a chipmunk problem also. I had bought a havaheart trap years ago but could never get it to set up properly. I would like to poison the buggers without taking anything else out.

Not true. Some are bolder and more aggressive than others. Many people have been attacked by a coyote/coyotes. They are wonderful animals, but have become a very big problem in this country. They have adapted to life in the city well! The only place in the US without coyotes is Long Island.

What a defense mechanism: cuteness. They are the cutest critters, but they are big-time pests. They can be pretty funny as well. We have a serious chipmunk problem. We used to have a squirrel problem until my father started his squirrel relocation program. He used to trap them, then drive them down to where we both worked at the time and release them. A coworker shared his backyard with out place of employment. One day he says to me, "Jeez Dan, I have a lot of squirrels in my yard." I just turned around, and walked away snickering.:)

I tried some various anti-chipmunk methods, including the Fishy method, which was not as successful for me as for him. I just realized I have not seen any of them this year so far....so I'm crossing my fingers. I would like to pull-out some weapons of mass-chipmunk-destruction (WMCD's) myself if they are just avoiding me for now.

I knew a guy who was sorta a pilot and had a gopher problem. He brought home some av-gas and poured it in a number of holes - not realizing the underground network is far more vast than what you see. He set off a fuse of sorts (I think it was paper towels soaked with gas) and retreated back 10 feet. When it went off, it blew him off the ground on to his ass. It did not get rid of the gophers. I do not suggest this method (nor the caddyshack method).

I found out today that the scratching sound I heard above the bedroom ceiling in January are chipminks. Saw one today disappear under leaves near the garage. When i approached it darted right up an opening in the houses siding. These suckers also ravaged my birdseed until I finally got a storage bin for the bags.

I am at war.

I shoot both coyotes and chipmunks, different weapons of course. Lots of folks shoot the coyotes up here, rural area, lots of folks shoot them up here rural area with lots of livestock.
