OT: COVID-19 Among BYers

I suffer from a chronic middle ear infection and it does mimic certain flue symptoms. Right now it is as bad as have ever had it, but the good news is that there is no temperature and no coughing. Except for watching basketball games I generally stay away from events and generally am a homebody so this isolation stuff doesn't change my lifestyle much. Other than shopping for essentials I stay home.

Just yesterday I called my sister in Portland Or. and my niece answered. She told me that her mother had checked herself into the hospital because she was really sick. During our conversation, she hung up because there was something going on outside and she wanted to see what was happening. She said the National Guard was on the street outside of my sister's house. It does not bode well. I called back and got no answer today. My sister who is 80, is high risk both in age and behavior. She went shopping constantly.

Substitute wine for beer, and that pretty much describes my life right now. Hubby is also working from home, but sharing "office space" is going better than I thought it would.

Wine and beer both, hunkering down, but easy since I already work from home and home is 13 acres in Colorado Rockies so I am used to being a hermit. As Colorado is major tourist destination, state has been hit hard. Governor just gave stay at home order. One county is having a blood draw test for all 8000 residents. It apparently is much faster. A second draw will be made in two weeks.

The explosion of cases and deaths in NYC is horrifying. While my job allows me to video conference and work at home, as a Manhattan dweller, I get to hear an ambulance siren every few minutes 24 hours a day and my only time outdoors is to my physical therapist and purchases late at night. Not sure what the world will look like in 3 months.

Carnac, I am presently in phone contact with a friend who has been tested and is positive. When I asked him what his symptoms were he told me that he had a low grade fever and coughing. He also said that the food her ate had a "different" taste and that he would suddenly break out in a sweat as if he were in a shower. He is in what he feels is his third week and is starting to feel "normal" although he retains his cough. He also said his taste buds are returning. He is in his early 70's and was (and hopefully is) in good physical shape. Again, thank you for the great post.

My wife and I are hunkered down, doing a lot of walking and face timing frequently with our son, his wife and our 15 month old grandson, who we do puppet shows for.

Aside from my wife working from home every day and my son being out of school for the rest of the year, things are fairly "normal" in my neighborhood. I go to work every day and the kids in the neighborhood play basketball and baseball every day it's not raining. Everyone is getting yard work done and repairs to their houses done. I'm having some entry doors being replaced as I type this. So, I guess you can say for my neighborhood, we are being as "normal" as we can.

For those that routinely experience seasonal sinus/respiratory ailments here’s something you may want to consider. I am one of those people who seemed to fight sinus congestion/upper respiratory infection every winter until, amazingly, this winter.

This past summer I finally went to see an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. He basically told me my sinuses were constricted, the result of two broken noses I suffered during my rough & rowdy days along with summertime allergies. He put me on a daily dose of Clariton and a nasal spray for the rest of my life. I can’t believe the difference it’s made. It’s like I can breathe again after years of just living with the alternative.

Years ago I was taking every allergy medication they had on the shelf. I finally went to a specialist and found out that I had a huge polyp. They removed it and I've never had to take an allergy medication since.

Wife and I are isolating and going out only for necessities. Unfortunately, our daughter has been diagnosed with rectal cancer and going through a regimen of testing prior to surgery. This is when we would normally be either on the road to or already in Ct. When surgery is scheduled, there will be NO ONE allowed in the hospital with her. Not even one designated person. Difficult to be responsible and still be supportive. The grandchildren are 17 & 23, so they are a great help and we will most likely stay here, in Maine. Won't be easy.

Oh yeah, we are healthy at this time. We're in our early 70s and suspect tourist season will be quiet this year. I have a suspicion that the present situation with this virus, is going to be longer than we are being led to believe. Stay healthy BYers and be responsible with decision making re; exposure.

Maine, our prayers go out to you. Hopefully the people who read your post will realize that maybe we don't have it as bad as we think we do. Used to go up around the Allagash (?) every year for a week of fishing. I have never met anyone from Maine that wasn't friendly and down to earth.

Like most here we're limiting our social contacts to grocery shopping and hitting the package store. Fortunately CT authorities have deemed wine and beer essential commodity. We try to walk every day (hips permitting) and have rediscovered cribbage. Last night we went "out to dinner" at one of our favorite seafood restaurants. Call in your order, drive up to the door and the servers bring it out to the car.

My wife and I have played a game of cribbage after coffee every morning for the past nineteen years.

I just saw a piece on our local news broadcast. It was reported that the virus can live on the surface of fruits and vegetables for up to 3 days that are regularly fondled by shoppers try to find a desired piece of produce. Wash your produce items when you get home.

It was also reported that the virus can also live on the bottom of our shoes for up to 5 days. It was suggested that you leave them outside or in the garage before entering your home. The more I learn about the virus and the victims it has claimed across the country, the more reluctant I’m becoming about going outside.

We need to do a Boneyard “roll call” this summer (around mid-August) to note who survived this crisis. I’ll start one if no one else does. I fully expect to see each and every one here check in. WBB, my wife is a nurse so I know that it probably will go in one ear and out the other but remind her that when you are exhausted your immune system starts to weaken and she has to stay strong for her patients.

I've only been buying fruit that needs to be peeled, and wash hands before and after handling/peeling. A banana can easily be eaten without ever touching the edible part; a mango not so much, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. There's no way I'm going near grapes, apples, etc.

I talked this morning to someone who has a relative working at Mt. Sinai. He has to live at the hospital for an indefinite period. They're just about at capacity now and expect it to get worse for about a week. Scary.

We show up every November, go back for Christmas in the city
with the kids
And then right back through April...
So, aside from the Yellow license plate, we're as local as anyone else...sort of a hybrid local.

I picked up the infection from her since we were quarantined together even before we knew she was infected. Fortunately for us, we got through without serious repercussions. I hope we now have immunity for a while!

We continue to wash hands frequently, stay at home for the most part, and wear masks when we go to a grocery store. We did not leave the house for nearly three weeks while we were infected and till all symptoms were completely gone.

So you can't taste food or smell things now? Was it hard to breathe like they are saying on TV? Apparently the virus can turn your lungs into what looks like broken glass on an X-ray and cause permanent lung damage.

They didn't have about 25% of what I ordered, but overall it was a good experience. I didn't go into the store, but the traffic flow in and out was heavy--people with practically Hazmat suits, people with winter scarves, and people with no protection whatsoever.

Edit: It's 12:45 AM and I just found 1 times lot for next Friday, 7 days out, at my closest store. The store I went to today also has only 1 time slot left for all of the next week.

It is madness! Last week I tried to grab a slot and they were gone by 12:15. The next day I got a 9am slot at about 12:03.

For the short term, it was pricier, but I ended up getting a delivery from Whole Foods instead.

Instacart is an option for grocery delivery, too.

First week of January I got what I thought was the Flu. First time in about 20 years. Wife came down with it a few days later. I got better went back to work for 3 days and started coughing. Never coughed that bad nearly threw up. Did strain muscles. Went to see the Dr. on the 2nd day. In March I pretty much quit clearing crap out of my lungs.

Wife's experiences was same as mine. Just not as severe. I either had the man version or the Elderberry concoction my wife took helped.

Lost 3 weeks of work in January. Came across the stats on the CDC's website that has the first confirmed case in the US as the 14th of January. Some doctors my wife (diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 3.5 years ago) follow says the coronavires was here in November/December.

So I selected "I think I've had it and recovered" but really have no idea.

had the same experience as you, at roughly the same time. I coughed so hard that I pulled a muscle in my side / back and It made it excruciating to cough. Told my if at the time that whatever I had was a game changer. But.... I got a flu test and tested positive for flu A. I think the strain this year was a killer.

My wife hasn’t used her sewing machine in many years. Yesterday, she went down to the basement, dusted it off and made a couple of cloth masks for us to use. I contributed one of my old cotton shirts to the cause.

She did a really nice job except for one issue. My wife selected a pink shirt. I was hoping for the desperado look, but instead, I look like an indulgent dad who’s playing dress up with his little girl. Oh well, I guess we all have to make sacrifices.

The good news is that my wife is at it again today. This time I picked out the shirt.....HUSKY BLUE!!!!

I think what this virus has done to your peripatetic tendencies must be equally as painful.
