So today I got a shot for tennis elbow(I don’t play tennis) at the orthopod, getting one every 3 months over the next 12-18 months. Right now I feel like the one armed man in The Fugitive, this hurts real bad but I know in a day or so it will be good.
Coincidentally on Instagram a video came up today of Sandy Koufax’ retirement press conference where he retired at the top of his game in 1966 due to elbow problems. He said he didnt want to keep having to have cortisone shots and he was getting them after EVERY game. Koufax was a hero of mine in baseball as a kid and it shocks me that he could go out there and throw 99 mph fastballs and curveballs that dropped off the table after getting these shots every outing.

Even wilder was that schilling had his ankle tendon stapled to his heel in the 2004 ALCS, the day before. The things athletes would do to play just 20 years ago feels like a century ago in terms of where they are today. Nowadays LeBron sits out if he has a cold sore.

I had MAJOR low back pain 20 years ago. Tried PT, traction, oral steroids (prednisone). Nothing helped. Got a cortisone shot and got about 10% relief. Two months later, a second shot and quickly got 90+% relief. At the time, I was told I could only have 3 shots in a year, so I held off on the 3rd -- and never ended up getting it. I hope your shots work as well as mine did!

That's what I've been told about the amount of cortisone shots you can get. So back when Koufax played they would give him one for every start? Surprised that didn't cause bone and cartilage damage. Or maybe it did.

I had 2 epidurals for low back issues, and the 2nd fixed it for years. Good luck.

Going for my 2nd in my neck next Thursday and hoping for the same results. I've got 4 screwed up disks all affecting different nerves in my back and arms. Sucks.

How'd you get tennis elbow? Been dealing with it for 11 months now from playing pickleball

I got it a few years back. Combination of golf and throwing BP for my son’s little league team. Or at least that was my ortho’s professional opinion.

I don’t do well with cortisone shots so it was the band that goes around your forearm right below the elbow and lots of ice to manage it. I understand some cases are worse than others.

LeBron is 40 and in his 20th season. The NBA is a grind.

I got 2 cortisone shots in my neck at c5-c6 three weeks ago. Did nothing- must've been the wrong spot. Got 2 more in my traps this week and going better but I know ultimately I need them to hit the right area of the cervical spine

Yes, glad you asked. Tennis elbow is just how they describe an injury to that part of the elbow and it’s not tennis all the time and mine came from waxing our 2 cars with pressure transferred there. Pickleball is going to cause a lot of it nowadays.
I bought an orbital polisher after that. I told my wife that it was her car that caused it. No sympathy.
The shot caused bad soreness but 600 mg Advil tamed it and will take another 400 before bed.

Sorry for you… it never worked for my neck. Too hard to find the right spot, but that was 25 years ago. Hope it’s ok for you.

I had it in my right arm from throwing BP to my kids team when he was about 10-11. Ortho told me that being in my right arm, it did not affect my right-handed golf swing and that he did not recommend cortisone shots since I was not looking for a quick temporary fix. Also told me that it wasn’t the cortisone that helps, it’s just the needle that gets the blood flowing. He told me to ice it. Then ice it more. Then when I thought I iced it too much to ice it more. And do stretches. Basically keep blood flowing to it and it eventually got better. It’s been almost 15 years and it’ll bother me a bit occasionally if I throw a football for a while but it’s generally good.

Then why would anyone ever get cortisone shots? Just stick a dry needle in there. Are you sure your doctor wasn't actually an acupuncturist?

......maybe that's the reason Lebron has lasted 20 years and Koufax 5. Lebron has also been incredibly durable. Kawhi would have been a better example.

Regular season, sure, but guys still gut it out in the playoffs. Look at Porzingis, just earlier this year.

I had 2 epidurals to fix 2 herniated disks (actually same one, C6-7, herniated twice). Neither did anything, had to get surgery both times.

Stitched, not stapled and every time he threw it tore a little bit, this thus the bloody sock.

He was just old school. He treated all the nearby HS football players and many Div 1 college athletes. He retired earlier this year and is very well respected. I am sure cortisone works in some situations but I do believe he steered me right.

Years ago i was going to Italy and was also suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. i had been caste for an orthotic but it wasn’t going to be ready in time for a the trip. i asked the Dr if there was anything that would help short term and he offered a cortisone shot. When he warned me it was really going to hurt he wasnt kidding. Something about the nerves in the heel make that brutal. My wife had cortisone shots in her knees without much pain so the area must make a difference. The shot worn off walking on a cobblestone street in Florence.

And Ronnie Lott having the tip of his pinkie amputated rather than miss some games to have it surgically repaired.

Jack Youngblood from the Rams played both the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl with a broken leg. Talk about tough and crazy.

I had a cortisone shot for my A-C joint in shoulder from playing hockey. It was immediate relief. Fortunately I only needed this one time.

It took a guy like that to beat the curse of the "Bambino." Epic badass performance.

Quotation from sports bureau:

He was told by the surgeon who sutured his tendons in place that it was a procedure that probably couldn't be done a third time. Schilling struck out 120 and walked 25 in postseason play. In the regular season, his 3,116 strikeouts are balanced against only 711 walks, 4.38 K's for every BB.

Last December I received a cortisone shot in my shoulder to relieve pain from an injury. Unfortunately I experienced a rare side effect from the shot - I ending up getting hiccups that would not stop for FIVE days. The shot eventually wore off and the hiccups stopped, but not before causing a bad case of acid reflux. The stomach healed and the shoulder got a little better, but when still had problems 10 months later this time the doctor prescribed PT which I am still doing. It sucks to get old, but I suppose the alternative is worse.
