So while I'm waiting for Ivy Bridge, I've decided to breath a little extra life into my current 4+ year old computer. I got a quad core processor to replace the dual core I currently have (plus a small bump in core speed). I'm going from 4GB to 8GB and decided I will do the refresh on a new SSD instead of the 4 RAID 10 SATA drives I currently have. I expect it should be snappier.

I currently have a copy of Kaspersky and MalwareBytes for protection. However, I notice a bunch of ads on the boneyard cause my system stress. Sometimes I get a Kaspersky message about blocking bad things, sometimes IE gives a warning about cross scripting and sometimes, the session dies and is restarted automatically.

I'm really a server and storage IT guy - not a desktop person. So here's my question - should I look elsewhere for good protection instead of Kaspersky and MalwareBytes? Thoughts?

As a fellow server and storage guy, my advice would be to use a different browser. Chrome or Firefox.

Seconded on the Chrome or Firefox - I use the trio of AVG Free, MalwareBytes(love it) and CCleaner, and the only problems I ever have with my computer/browsers are occasional Flash Player crashes.

Wow, you editing video? That's a lot of power and storage.

I really like Microsoft's Security Essentials. It works great and doesn't slow the system at all. Very unobtrusive too. I also run Malwarebytes occasionally.

Since I wear the tech support hat for my friends and family, what I typically do is :

Set Microsoft Security Essentials to run daily
Set Spyware Search & Destroy to run daily
Set browser to Firefox (or Chrome) with the AdBlock Plus extension

Usually... that's enough.

Most recently, my uncle had a nasty virus that got through Security Essentials, so I gave Malwarebytes a try, and it worked great. I set that to run weekly in addition to above. Might have to include that in future builds...

How's AVG these days? I haven't used it in a couple years.

You going to set up a couple SSDs in a RAID array?

I second Microsoft Security Essentials ... they've made great strides and it's very lightweight.

Use Chrome with adblock and MS Security Essentials for your AV. It's way lighter on system resources than Kaspersky.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes these days. Used to use AVG but it became horribly bloated, and the update mechanism was really annoying.
