Have spent the last few days touring colleges in the southeast w my daughter. Today was UNC and Dook. As much as it pains me, and it pains me greatly (I wouldn't even go in the bookstore and I covered my ears whenever they talked about hoops), Dook is a pretty damn impressive school. So if she gets in, can I even consider letting her go?? UNC was pretty impressive too, but it wouldn't bother me at all if she wanted to go there, and she didn't like it that much anyway. Friday is Georgetown, that also wouldn't bother me.....only Dook really bothers me. Any pearls of wisdom on how to handle??

That is certainly the mature, adult thing to do.....but when it comes to Dook, I am anything but mature or adult ( as my wife reminded me on numerous occasions today)
I don't blame you cause dook sucks :) have you showed her UConn?

If my daughter could get into Duke and the like, I wouldn't have her looking at schools like UNC if it's out of state.

I hate the whole aura of that school, but it would be pretty insane to not go if she got in. All great schools so she's obviously smart, but duke is a great school. I wouldn't let your bball history get in the way of that.

Its a great situation for your daughter and for you just have fun with it. If she does go to a school of a rival/hated team it will just make it all the more interesting.

I understand your dilemma. Yours is a problem as old as time. You want to do something that you know in your heart is wrong. Normally I'd encourage you to do the right thing and shun the place, but principles get a little fuzzy when it comes to what your kids want. So my suggestion is that you let her go, but do penance for the foul act of writing a check to that institution, having DOOK gear in your home, etc. Now your penance doesn't have to be extreme or expensive. It just needs to meaningful. You should .... urinate on Cameron Indoor Stadium (CIS and piss rhyme so that's a sign right there.) If you choose to post a pict of the stain on the side of the building as evidence of your penance, well that's up to you.

There you go you can't get more fair that daughter. Your daughter goes to a decent school. You keep your status as a UConn fan, and as bonus you become a legend on the board. Everybody wins. Keep us informed as to the decision and your response to it.

Good luck and wear shoes that you can run in.

I've already made it clear to my wife:
- No Duke
- No BC
- No rival BEast schools (or soon to be former BEast schools)

Just add Kentucky in there and I completely agree

If she's smart enough and you can pay then Duke is a great choice. Did she think about any ivy league schools?

Just seperate athletics from academics. One has nothing to do with the other and you can still hate the dook basketball team with the passion they deserve.

Congrats that you have a very bright child!

I'm sure you'll be proud of her no matter what happens.

If this is really that important for you tell and her and your wife she has your blessing but not your financial backing if she goes to Duke! Not one dime!!!

No questions about it, I'd consider Georgetown over Dook anyday.

I think the real question is though, what is she interested in for college? Is it medicine? law? business? social sciences? I would recommend starting in the Undecided to get a feel of how the classes do work at these universities, make sure they are part of the Gen Ed. requirements so your not screwed.

Good luck and let us know where she gets in!

Duke is an excellent school, a cut above any of the other colleges named in this thread.

And I've met scores of great people who went there. They just all happen to have atrocious taste in basketball teams.

Obviously Dook is an excellent academic school so let her go there if she gets in. With one promise. That she still is a UConn fan and doesn't become a fan of the Dook basketball teams. And if she ever becomes a geeky Cameron Crazy, for even one game, you're pulling the plug on the tuition payments. How's that for a deal?
