As we Boneyarders project the lineups, points per game per player, minutes to be played, blowouts, etc., permit a word of caution about the hazards of handicapping. I will use Major League Baseball and SI to make my point.
Granted, the season is still young and 130+ games per team remain on the schedule. Still, a peek at Sports Illustrated's prognostications for the AL East suggest that even respected (and well compensated) experts can, and do, err.
The SI projection was that the Tampa Bay Rays would top the division by winning 92 games (of 162). They stand today at 11 W/13 L. They may yet make it to 92. And they may not.
Toronto was selected to finish second and win 91 games. They have won only 9 thus far (16 L), Blue Jay pitchers have been steadily bombarded. They won't see 91 victories.
The Red Sox were written off for last place, 77 wins. The Sox are at 17/7 now with a resurgent pitching staff so they appear to be achieving beyond SI expectations, even without Ace Beckett and Flash Crawford.
The moral to this post? Temper your rosy predictions with a dose of caution. All except TonyC, of course.
