Forget running. Walk on a treadmill at incline for 20-30 minutes. Start at 3 or 4% and over months slowly work up from there but you don’t need to, and do not even touch the hand rails on the machine. Yes it makes it much harder.
If you have access to a stair climber with real stairs that climb then try that, once again not touching hand rails. I see people at the health club laying their entire body weight on those rails and what does that do? I hate that machine and don’t do it.
 
Army JAG, 7 active, and in my 19th as a reservist. The run time slows every year, but I’ll go to the bittersweet end.
I did 11 in the Army and ARNG, infantry and combat medic. Good for you for staying in!
