The thread on bygone behaviors made me think of some words and expressions you rarely hear anymore.

From my early childhood (around 1960) and uttered by the grandparents generation especially:

- sit on the "stoop"
- throw something in the "ashcan"
- (in math) referencing "aught", also used to refer to years like "aught eight", the year my dad was born

Also, and similarly, words that don't mean quite the same thing. "Rewind" when we are watching a sports event involves no rewinding of anything. Likewise, "Taping" a game doesn't involve any tape anymore.

Anyone think of any others?

I still say "stoop" for my front steps.

My grandparents had a dumbwaiter in their apartment.
 
Ha ha, Meyers, I actually thought of that after I posted!!!
(We did meet a waiter once from Duke. I really had a hard time keeping a straight face!)
