While the show itself wasn't a sitcom, I'll throw in one of the more memorable characters on any show in the 80s: Vic Hitler "The Narcoleptic Comic" on Hill St. Blues (played by Terry Kiser, who played the corpse in "Weekend at Bernie's"). Vic Hitler only made three appearances, but provided comic relief and was perhaps the strangest character ever conceived for TV at that point in time.

OK , these are not the stars but character actor seconds or near firsts, IMO you have Louie Depalma- Danny DeVito, Jason Alexander’s George, Michael Richard as Kramer, John Ratzenberger’s Cliff Claven, and fighting it out for first place is Barney Fife as Don Knotts and in the lead is Ed Norton by Art Carney. I realize there are later sitcoms like The Office, Modern Family and others that have good characters.
