OT: Best Northeast Beaches

Well I'm leaving Chatham today and didn't get eaten by a shark (water was very cold though) so I guess I'm out of the shark death pool. However I did get engaged up hear near the lighthouse at Lighthouse Beach this wknd so maybe that counts for something?

Congrats.

Also it's early yet, they are just making their way up the coast. End of July through August/ September is when they make it to the cape in great numbers.
They were in North Carolina a few weeks ago creating havoc, ( 7 attacks in two weeks! Yikes)this week they are being spotted of New Jersey.

1) If you want to go in the water, don't go to a CT beach. Unless you want to step on a tampon applicator or wade around human waste to the point you have an itchy rash.

2) if you're a little adventurous and not that cheap, I second the National Seashore and Wellfleet/Beachcomber trip. Try to grab a weeknight on the cheap at a hotel.

3) For the ride time and cost, Narragansett is a solid call. Especially in August with some of the tourist crowd out of the way. And a trip to Aunt Carries to end the day is a must. http://www.auntcarriesri.com

South Beach on the Vineyard. Can't do a day trip as it's a haul to get there. Nothing else is like it in NE.

.-.
Vineyard is nice and some southern Maine beaches are OK but cold.

Fly to bermuda and hit Warwick Long Bay or church beach.(you can be on the beach in under 6 hours)

Just got back from Westerly. I have never had trouble parking in Watch Hill but it was completely full before 10 a.m. today.

So we ended up at Misquamicut. My first time there in 30 years. What a giant clusterfark.

Brutal traffic. Overcrowded beach. The seaweed on the beach stank.

If you are thinking about heading there, take a day off and go mid-week. (It was not my decision to go today.)

I'm not much for Misquamicut because I think it's dumpy. Turns out, though, that everyone descended there yesterday because one of the beaches in Narragansett was closed.

I want to like CT beaches, and I've been giving them second chances for the better part of two decades now, but holy mackeral are they disgusting during the summer. The water (stuff floating in it), the trash on the beaches, etc.

Grew-up on Silver Sands in Milford, close by; but, the best cleanest water around. Spent days in high school, sometimes during high school, at Hammonasset and Misquamicut. Have a college friend who was from Westhampton out on Long Island (did say Northeast beaches, not New England), nice beach; but, too many beaches are private and exclusive. Not a big fan of that culture. After college, spent a lot of time around Boston. Coast Guard Beach on the Cape is my favorite and my second is Crane Beach in Ipswich. I proposed to my wife during a Harvest Moon on Plum Island out by Newburyport and we used to take a dog during the off season to Salisbury Beach, which is in between Plum Island and Hampton Beach (NH). Hampton and Revere Beach, which is just outside of Boston are interesting culturally. Spent more time recently in Scarborough Maine, which are really nice, not too crowded beaches; but, they water rarely gets above 65, even in August. A few weeks back, took the family to Wildwood Crest. Huge beach, which spreads crowds around, good waves, and the craziness of the Wildwood Boardwalk is only a 5 minute car ride or 30 minuet walk away. They all are difference, meeting different needs.

I lived in CT for 50 + years and most of it was in a coastal town. Let's be frank. CT beaches suck. RI are a little bit better. Cape Cod National Sea Shore is very nice. Personally,as far as the east coast, I'll take the beaches of the Carolinas. Just gorgeous and, aside from Myrtle Beach, they are not very crowded. I'm sure some FL beaches are nice but I just do not like FL.

In Rhode Island, I love the Charlestown Breachway (but a very small parking lot so must get there early) and the East Matunuck State Beach, which has great facilities, a large beach, and restaurants/pier/ice cream all within walking distance

East Matunuck is great. And Matunuck Oyster Bar afterwards is great. I find Charlestown gets too crowded. Scarborough generally too breezy/windy.

Great article. I wonder if the great whites are tagging and naming us.

One of the big ones tagged off the Cape was roaming around the Wildwoods in Jersey back in May. Nothing like knowing there's a 16 foot, 3,500 lbs shark about a mile from the beach where my kids and I go swimming.

That big girl gets around going from Cape Code to Bermuda and then up and down coast between Georgia and New Jersey.

I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means "friendship".

I've got to defend the CT beaches. Now I wouldnt vacation here but some of the beaches are great place to spend the day or a few hours. Towards the end of the summer the water gets a bit warm and a lot of seaweeds and crap but I live in Milford and love going to Ft Trumbull during the week especially at low tide. Better than living in the Midwest that for sure

The scenery at Sherwood Island in Westport was usually pretty good in the summer.

CT has a pretty shoreline with the rocky islands and inlets lining the coast. The beaches are nothing to write home about but are fine for a quick visit with the kids.

After watching shark week I think I will be sticking with pools.

I was at White Horse beach in Plymouth last summer swimming in the water a week before one took a bite out of that girl's kayak. She was damn lucky. Knocked her out and then took a chomp out of the boat instead of her. Don't go kayaking where the seals are supposed to be.

Especially because seals are a lot faster in the water than a human is.

Out of all the lifeforms that ever go in to salt water, humans are by far the least able to defend themselves from attacks.

Mayor Vaughn: "Fellows let be reasonable, huh. This is not the time to perform some kind of half-assed autopsy on a fish......and I'm not going to stand here and have that thing cut open and see that little Kintner boy spill all over the dock"

If they'd let us whack the seals in Chatham the shark problem would be reduced. My family has had a place there for like 70 years or something and those seals blow. Foul the bass fishery and bring in the Sharks.. The Sharks weren't as pronounced a few decades back. I try and avoid going in the summer because it's a mess but when I do I just cringe at the goofy Chatham/shark rubbish for sale.

Requirements for a good beach.

An ample supply of good looking women wearing 2-piece bikinis is so integral it doesn't get numbered. It just is.

1. Loose and fine grain sand. You need to be able to bury your toes in without much effort up to your ankles.
2. Beer and booze allowed in cans and containers- no glass.
3. Fresh water showers readily available near the parking lot.
4. When I get in to water up to my hips, I want to be able to see my toes.
5. Minimal cigarette butts. We know smokers are pigs who treat the world as their ash tray, but I prefer not to see it at the beach.
6. Clean bathrooms for the women. Men, the ocean is your toilet. Just remember the water tastes salty for a reason.
7. Parking some semblance of organization with clear in/out paths.
8. Good lifeguards
9. Gradual drop off in to the water. I don't want to be chest high 20' from the waterline.
10. Water temp of at least 75 degrees by June 15th.

Agreed. I liked better when the National Seashore belonged to the people and Striped Bass, not the seals and the sharks.

In RI, I like Scarborough the best. It's not as crazy, busy as Misquam with good facilities and parking. The water is warmer than the Cape with better waves than the sound.

Going on Saturday with wife, getting there before noon. First timer and will be there for about 5 hours. Hope to be snoozing/lounging and picnicking.

I know its going to be crowded but where's a generally good location to 'claim'?

Also when's the best time to arrive to claim?

If it exists, looking for a spot away from the waves (so if high tide I don't have to move) and typically away from the foot traffic.
