As I write, Rafa is on ESPN2 early in the 3rd set, after he easily won the first 2.

By advancing past the 2nd round, Angelique Kerber has joined the club of 100 wins at Majors.

We all know that American male tennis has been in sad shape, and this current major is no exception, in that already a host of Americans have been bounced. Taylor Fritz is one who has escaped, by triumphing over well known, athletic Gael Monfils.

But the larger story belongs to Frances Tiafoe, ranked 39, who has ousted #5 Kevin Anderson. Time for bandwagon jumping?

Among the top 10 women, the only casualty is Kiki Bertens, while the rest of the top seeds got through pretty easily.

And now Rafa is victorious.

Saw Tiafoe's interview. Nice kid. Would be nice if he can make the quarters.

And now the tallest of trees are all dismissed. You need be 6' 10" to qualify. Americans John Isner and Reilly Opelka, first, then Ivo Karlovic lost to Kei Nishakori(# 8) in 5 sets with tienreakers galore. to finish.

As in round 1, Venus needed 3 sets, and as in round 1, she was dominant in set3, allowing only 2 games to her opponent first, and now blanking Cornet to finish.

Simona Halep still looks shaky out there, again needing 3 sets, this time to an unseeded American. But she remains a tough finisher. She was down in set3, but won the last 4 games.

The Madisons went their separate ways. Brengle actually took a set from #7 Karolina Pliskova, but lost. Keys is successful in straight sets.

Speaking of 7's Dominic Thiem retired and so is gone.

And the US Opens finalists last year, Serena & Osaka, cruised in straight sets.

As I write, Novak and Jo Willi are battling in the midnight hour. So too is #4 Alexander Zverev with Jeremy Chardy entering set #5.

Both are through the 3rd round. Check.
Both needed 3 sets in rounds 1 & 2. Check.
Both have proven they know how to battle back. Check

And come Saturday #1 Halep and #37 Venus will be together again for the 6th time.

I mean, who could want to miss such a match?

Just caught Amanda Anisimova for the first time. Wow, what poise and game. On to the 4th round after beating 2 seeded players. Her potential next opponent is a player she beaten before, Kvitova.

Beat me to it. She is like a cobra. So thin but generates so much power. :)

Sharapova beat defending champion Wozniacki in 3 sets. Gotta love the poetic justice and sweet revenge, as Wozniacki was one of the players who whined and cried the most about Sharapova's so-called favorable treatment following her return after the drug ban in 2017.

Serena, on to the next... hopefully I catch a match one of these nights

Cilic seems ready to pull of a 5 set win over Verdasco after being down 0-2. Verdasco had a mini break in a 4th set tie breaker but double faulted. After that, it's a train running down hill. I guess we will have to endure more games of Cilic's annoying ball bouncing before his serve. :(

I agree, Woz lost me there. Same with that never-was with the big mouth, Genie Bouchard.

Yo, Wire Chief! What male was awarded the 1965 Wimbledon Cup?

The young American vs Petra is the only singles match scheduled for 11am. Surely the Tennis Channel will give it complete attention.

Kvitova dominating over Anisomova Lost set 1 6-2.

And the 2nd is not going well for the American either. The Czech has been overpowering, hitting 80% of first serves and losing only 1/3 of her foe's 2nd serves. Not bad for one who almost lost her dominant hand to an attacker.

One the other hand, UVA graduate Danielle Collins smoked #2 Kerber 6-0 and 6-2. And lets just say after her post match interviews, she does not lack any confidence.

As I write this early morn, Sloane is early in her match vs. the woman with the longest last name in Russian history. If I have reason to mention her again, I'll call her "P".

Roger is gone in 4 sets a short while ago to the young Greek.
I had some thoughts, seeing his missus in the stands. Some of you will find this politically
incorrect, but here goes anyway. When Mirka started appearing in the stands in support of Roger (and later became his wife and mother of his kids), I remember thinking that she was kind of ordinary in her looks.
She was a once a pro player herself, and over time we learned that she was good with numbers and business sense. So Roger & she had a tennis consciousness in common , as well as a complementary
link that he would make big money, and Mirka would manage it.
This made me realize that beyond romance, they had an old fashioned economic union, the like of which reflected centuries of stable marriages and stable societies.
Now, our notions of female beauty are anchored in those who are in their late teens and early to mid 20's, the Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss America contestants, as well as the newcomer Hollywood actresses.
Other sport stars collect their trophy girlfriends and glamourous wives for whatever length of time they last.
And surely some such women evolve to be less attractive, when they reach their 30's.
Now, my point is that I get a kick out of seeing the, what, divine guidance involved for the Federers.
Her judgment that Roger would have years of fortune on the court, and his that she would turn into a beauty in her 30's. Cause as I look at her in the stands today, she has become such.

Well, Venus pronounced Simona's game against her as flawless. Simona's strokes landed so consistently deep that Venus lacked the time and space to play her own game.
And next up will be that Simona vs. Serena. That will be the
Aussie night match at 7. three am EST.

Madison Keys is quietly moving on, and we can see her on the Tennis Channel at 7pm EST. She'll be battling with #6 seed Svitolina.

And speaking of #6 seeds, Marin Cilic has been ousted by the Spaniard Agut.

Here's the day's schedule.

Match Schedule | Australian Open

Serena takes out Halep in 3. Give Halep credit for reversing a 6-1 2-0 deficit and going toe - toe.

Not surprisingly, Serena has improved her level of fitness significantly from where she was at last year’s US Open. Her ability to win a tough 3 set match against the #1 player in the world is evidence of that fact.

If she gets through her quarterfinal match vs Plyskova, a potential rematch against Osaka in the semifinals awaits. As a result of Serena’s meltdown in the US Open finals when Osaka beat her, a rematch would be one of the most hyped tennis matches in a very long time.
