From @JGonStrib: Penn State hockey success spurring others to look at sport. Arizona State might join Big Ten hockey
http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/296003651.html?page=all&prepage=1&c=y#continue

>>In the meantime, Arizona State will have to build its résumé as an independent Division I member for the next two seasons. After that, the Sun Devils will join a conference, and some expect it to be the Big Ten. The Pac-12 and Big Ten have a long athletic history and like schools in their “Power 5” conferences. They also have TV networks hungry for more prime-time sporting events.

Arizona State and the Big Ten both confirmed they’ve discussed a hockey future together. An outside school competing in one Big Ten sport already occurs in men’s lacrosse with Johns Hopkins.<<

Close - Colorado College and Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs have Denver beat by 60 miles +/-
Currently, they would be. I would not be shocked at all to see a southern California school start a program in the next 5-10 years. The sport is growing there exponentially in the youth ranks as well as interest in the pro game. If they can find a donor, it makes too much sense for a USC or UCLA to investigate a program. The perception is that other Pac-12 schools are closely monitoring ASU as a test case to see if college hockey in the west is something that can be viable. It might not be for the entire conference, but I believe five or six programs out there could sustain one with success.

Not too long ago it seemed that the number of colleges with NCAA ice hockey teams was shrinking, as schools such as Iona were dropping the sport. It's good to see that this is potentially turning around. Hopefully Penn State and Arizona State is only the beginning It certainly is more exciting to see more colleges and conferences offering the sport.

There's a rumor the USF, with Jeff Vinick (the owner of the Lightning) is going to upgrade their club team. Tampa Bay has some good hockey high schools now. Not Minnesota or New England quality, but good.

Linda McMahon's money would have been better spent being our big fish.
There may have been a far better chance of McMahon money (if they decided to donate to a school) going to ECU than to UConn.

Hadn't heard anything about USF, though that'd be a bit surprising. Tampa is generally not a good sports town and USF doesn't have an established fanbase. The Lightning do respectably well, but they're by no means a team with an enormous following. It'd be interesting to see, but much more of a longshot at success than ASU or another West Coast Pac-12 team.

BB, the Lightning are follows by lots of people. High school hockey is getting popular and near here, a 3 rink building is being built for hockey programs.
