Seems like airbnb.com for cars. Way cheaper than any rental company (like 60%) for a family trip to my parents in Florida

It’s a crap shoot. I know who have rented them fine and few who got clunkers. Buyer beware.
On the car owner side I had a coworker a few years who bought a high end limited edition Corvette he was renting out in the Destin, FL area. He assured me he only needed to rent it 3 days a month to pay the note and then he gets to drive it the rest of the month for free. Six months later he traded it in for a RAM truck.

Used it in Reno to go to Tahoe for a mountain bike weekend. Was easy peasy, and all worked out great. But I can see how it can be a crapshoot based on the owner.

We have used it 3 times , not high end cars but put on hundreds of miles no problems. All different areas.

Used it to drive an SUV from Boston to Quebec - had a great experience and a good price, but made sure to book something with a lot of reviews. I was under 25 and the price was much better

Seems like a lawsuit, waiting to happen for whoever's renting their car out.

The big issue I see whenever I’ve looked at the site is that so many of the cars are 6-10 years old. One of the main draws of renting a car is that you generally get something new. I don’t want to be dealing with car trouble on vacation, on a business trip with a schedule to keep or in a place I am unfamiliar with. Also, a lot of the newer cars tend to be Teslas for some reason. I don’t want an electric car on vacation. Charging is inconvenient.

Heading to Detroit in August bringing the son back to school so I'd figure I'd check this out. I am a USAA member so they have a good deal with AAA but wanted to compare. $172 total for what I got from AAA for a full size and nothing close enough to warrant a change. Plus not sure about the whole pick up/return process. So going to pass this time but also I'm older and set in my ways.

I used it once and had no issue. I think it honestly depends on where you're going. Used it in PHX and they had Turo rentals at the top of one of the name brand rental company's garage. Key was in a tow hitch lock box and was easy to get in/out.

I know there are mileage caps so be careful of that if planning to do a ton of travel. Friends have used and had to meet someone to hand over the car (this is more common than my experience above on Turo).

It’s just like airbnb - I have used it several times and the cars have ranged from great to middling as well as some mild issues getting access. Great way to rent something higher end or exotic depending on locale. Also nice to get a good car for less than some econobox from Avis or whatever so it’s my go-to for rentals, I am willing to deal with a small hassle to get a BMW instead of a Kia for less, and hell the agency experience is never good either.

My problem is that I need to hold 8 and luggage for a 11 day cruise. Rentals per day for a big boy like that is rough after all the taxes etc.

This looks good for the customer but why would anyone put their nice car/cars on this service? I get it if you have some beaters you don't care about but people tend to not care about items that aren't their own and nice cars are something that need to be treated well. Also are people putting financed and leased cars on here? The overwhelming majority of cars are financed and or leased.

My understanding is that Turo (like Airbnb) isn't really many owners putting up there car a few days a week for extra cash anymore. It used to be a lot of leases. It's turning more corporate.

Like any of these things, there might be a time and place where it can really work for you. The one time we used it, I didn't think it was worth the trouble for the (in this case) paltry savings. About a beer and a half.

I’ve used it 4-5 times and haven’t had any issues. Always go with high rated cars

Reading the legal small print... if I get a flat when I have the car, do I pay or does the owner?

Used them several times, no problem. Saved a bunch, almost half but I didn’t care if I drove an older used car. Of course for more money you can get any upscale car.

Went to Hawaii for a couple weeks last Summer - got a Jeep thru Turo. We had it washed before we returned it at the airport where the walkthru was fine, but then just before boarding they sent us that we put holes in the jeep fenders like a screwdriver was used to puncture it. Fought it and won, but they were scammers looking to make money on their Jeep.

As others have had a fine time, put in an asterisk as I am OAD with them.

That’s why you photograph the car from all 4 sides when you get it.

Not just when you get it but give it back too.
Yes. Car rental prices can be completely off the wall. It’s like the Wild West out there. I wanted a car for a week in Florida a couple years ago, nothing fancy, and was quoted over $700 for a compact. Turo was under $300 at the time.

it’s generally good but you need to be careful. I rented last summer for two days and paid for extra insurance. Long story short someone rear ended me on the highway, completely their fault and the police on scene said so.

A lot of people renting their vehicles on there do not have the necessary insurance to be renting their cars out to strangers, as you need a special rental car insurance for that. So the guy I rented from wanted me to call his insurance and say I was his friend borrowing the car. He basically wanted me to commit insurance fraud for him.

Anyway Turo tried to get 500 dollars from me even tho I paid for extra insurance and it was not my fault and the other drivers insurance should be paying all the damage cost.

Anyway, I never paid, so I probably can never use the app again ‍♂️. My other experiences with Turo were good prior to that.
