OT: Anti Virus recommendations

Just got a new PC and was wondering what the tech folks think is the best option these days. In the past I've used AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The trial version of NOrton will be expiring soon and was never a big fan of Norton

COMCAST I know provides either Mcaffee or Norton Suite free for subscribers. You can supplement that with a spy/spamware.

I had some isues with AVG and switched to Avast (free) which has been running smoothly for several years now.

For this I use my ceremonial 200th post. Sheesh.

Just use the free one that comes with Windows - Security Essentials or Windows Defender or whatever it's called these days.

Yes, it isn't bad. But viruses are old news now anyway and not the main threat. What you need is a decent firewall.

Windows 8 or 7?

If 7 then get Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a free download and is as good or better than most free antivirus suites. Supplement that with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and you're all set.

Windows 8 already has Security Essentials built-in. Just get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and you're all set.

No more problems with these 2 installed.

One possible problem is whether you're talking about the Microsoft Security Essentials as an anti-virus. You shouldn't run two AV programs at the same time.

Both Avast and MSE are good AVs - just as good as programs like Norton that you have to pay for but don't take up as much space.

Make sure you install a firewall with the AV.

Avast or AVG plus an occassional run of Malwarebytes AND SuperAntiSpyware. The two anti-spy/malware don't run continuously and I've found that they are not updated with the same definitions, so you capture more spy/malware.

These are all free programs, so you can download/erase to your heats content.

Also I recommend clearing all Internet activity/cookies/temp files/history on a periodic basis, and an occassional defrag to speed up you system.
