I can't believe she has destroyed two national treasures. On a side note, this has lots of interesting implications in regards to genetic testing. She probably has some cadillac health insurance plan - but curious as to whether an insurance company would pay for a proactive treatment that has an 87% chance of occurring. My guess is "no" today, but "yes with an asteric" in the coming years.

My mother passed away of breast cancer at 46. My aunt had the BRCA 1 gene. She had the same procedure done along with a side order of hysterectomy. All covered by her insurance.

The costs of the surgery must be high but fighting cancer plus surgical measures to do so must be very expensive as well. Tough choice but is a no-brainer when you look at the big picture.

My mom went through the exact same circumstances. Fortunately, her employer provides very good health coverage and it was all covered. A tough decision, but generally the right decision if you have the gene and a history.

History of breast cancer in your family is one of the determinants if tests like this are covered. They aren't always.
