I can't believe she has destroyed two national treasures. On a side note, this has lots of interesting implications in regards to genetic testing. She probably has some cadillac health insurance plan - but curious as to whether an insurance company would pay for a proactive treatment that has an 87% chance of occurring. My guess is "no" today, but "yes with an asteric" in the coming years.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long this will take to turn into an all out political brawl about healthcare?

She should auction off the parts for charity.

My mother passed away of breast cancer at 46. My aunt had the BRCA 1 gene. She had the same procedure done along with a side order of hysterectomy. All covered by her insurance.

On the evening news they said the genetic test costs $3,000.00. The sample can be obtained by a swipe from the inside of the mouth. The costs of the surgery must be high but fighting cancer plus surgical measures to do so must be very expensive as well. Tough choice but is a no-brainer when you look at the big picture.

Also covered by insurance if risk factors derived by ACS are present.

And why does the test cost $3k?
A. The lab is for-profit.
B. They only administer the test to people who can actually afford it.

10 years ago my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39. After having surgery to have a tumor removed her doctor told her about a new genetic test and the implications that may come with it. Well she tested positive and had to make the decision of having her breasts and ovaries removed. Being way braver than I could ever be she had the surgery where they then found she had an early stage of ovarian cancer. This test and surgery saved her life and was paid for BY OUR INSURANCE. We are blue collar middle class. Shame on you huskypantz and I hope you or anyone else will ever have to go through this.

I am glad to hear it was caught early enough. Must have been a tough time for the two of you. I am glad it is behind you. Count yourself blessed, as ridiculous as that sounds.

My mom went through the exact same circumstances. Fortunately, her employer provides very good health coverage and it was all covered. A tough decision, but generally the right decision if you have the gene and a history.

Hard to find someone more sophomoric (i.e. immature) in their humor than me. But, I just don't see anything funny about breast cancer.

The thread is not about breast cancer. It's about a hot chick, double masectomy and genetic testing.
