AI is practically everywhere. I'm not looking to discuss its merits (doesn't matter now), but its practical usages or benefits.

Is anyone here using it for personal purposes? If so what are some good usages (e.g. stock analysis, travel info, etc.) other that google inquiry like stuff?

Probably using it without knowing it in some cases. Lot's of chatbots/helpbots are starting to use it, search engines have started to implement it here and there. Some things like Siri and Alexa have started to use it.

Intentional private usage, sometimes I use it for research to ask for books to read on subjects when Google doesn't quite work. It's hit or miss. Usually get a list and then google the book titles individually. I have been forced to use it a bit for work also, but just bc one of my clients is a moron.

For personal use, it's nothing more than an advanced search engine for me. I used it last night to search for some flights. Not much different than using Kayak as a website or Google as a search engine.

We are starting to use it for work. Our AI algorithm has provided me with good responses to my prompts on areas I know what the right answer should be. It's a trust building experience right now. I would use it for situations like familiarization briefings and summaries. For more technical information where correctness is critical and any ambiguities have to be removed, I still double and triple check using external resources for accuracy.

... imho, it’s just the modern extension of tools we’ve been using since the 1970s, like spell check.

I use it all time time, personally and professionally. You said personally, so here are a few ideas:

1) I needed a graduation gift for my nephew who's not a great student and doesn't know what he wants to do in life.
2) I had a touchy situation where I wanted to have a serious talk with someone and asked for some advice and it gave me great ideas to frame the conversation in a non-confrontational way.
3) I've had it look at my investments and make suggestions. Not my retirement type stuff, but my play money.
4) I use it to get a non-biased political recap of things posted on social media, asking for factual basis to support their points.
5) I recently rewatched the HBO series "The Leftovers" which is filled with symbolism and open ends. I got a review of the symbolism after each episode that was insanely helpful.

I have not used it much but have seen benefits of it in my industry. Some of the technical specialists I work with have trained their AI using product manuals and technical documents so they can quickly just ask a question and get the answer instantly rather than have to search through the manual or document.

I’ve found it useful to suggest a medical diagnosis from symptoms.

I only tried it because saw an article that Ai diagnosed a cause for a condition that the patients Dr said they would have never considered without patient telling the Dr to check her thyroid…which turned out to have a small tumor.

NGL, I relied on AI pretty heavily to help me get some course work done for my college classes since I was right up against the deadline for assignments to be turned in. To be clear, I didn't blatantly copy/paste directly, but I definitely used AI to give me a baseline to work off of.

And using practice questions for state tests does nothing more than increase scores on state tests.

Doing so is a legacy of NCLB, and it does very little to improve the education of students at any level.

I know you need to do it, but it's a shame that it has to be done.

... an archaic example, ATMs and online banking disrupted the financial industry ... I don't see many raising their hand, wanting to go back to the 'good old days' of standing in line for 30 minutes during their lunch break, to make a deposit/withdrawl during bankers' hours

You just reminded me. I have a friend that had some swelling and redness around his ankle. He said it was one thing, I snapped a picture and asked ChatGPT and when he went to a Dr, ChatGPT had it pegged perfectly.

I started wearing a CGM to see how my diet impacted blood glucose, not for diabetes. For several years I've woken up between 2-3 am...figured it was just not being 30 anymore...showed the data to AI, gave it info on my diet, etc. Turns out my blood glucose was crashing when I woke up...probably an adrenal response to too low glucose. AI suggested I wasn't eating enough carbs, suggested carbs after I work out and an evening protein/carb snack.... on most nights when I take the snack..I don't wake up..and my glucose doesn't crash....

The amount of water a single AI engine uses per year is in the hundreds millions and will only get worse. Energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, electronic waste shipped to developing countries, etc.
