Yes, they are pests. I believe imported to New York's Central Park Shakespeare Gardens to provide all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare's works, They liked it here to the detriment of many other local bird species.

You can see a similar murmuration in the fall on the highway bridges around Jewel Ave. in the Bronx (a few miles from the George Washington Bridge. They all come in toward evening to roost under the bridges. I saw it once about 10-15 years ago. It's an amazing sight. Same thing can be observed in Cape May, NJ during the fall migration, only instead of Starlings, it's Cardinals, Blue Jays and many other species all bunching up in groups of their own kind at the NJ tip toward evening to wait for the next day when they will hop across the expanse of water to Delaware on their way south. It's an amazing sight to see a cloud of yellow (Goldfinches) or blue or red floating through the air. Tons of bird watcher go there every year to observe.
