Help!

I've just been informed by my AD that basketball practice starts today at 3 PM after all communication prior to now is that it starts the week after Thanksgiving.

7th and 8th graders. My 20 boys are sharing half of the gym with 20 girls. In total, there will be three coaches.

50 minute practice.

What's the plan...

High hedge, poor inbounding, and the Purvis... Done.

30 minutes of intense conditioning followed by knockout where they’ll all have fun but you can see who has potential skill.
(This assumes middle school kids although you didn’t specify)

Edit: you totally did specify which is probably what made me think middle school lol

How many balls do have for 20 kids?
5 minute warm up jogging laps around the court. Lay up line. Two line passing drills, chest and bounce passes. Dribbling hand offs, both hands. Free shooting. Repeat three times. This will give you some idea of who can do what.

Stairs. If it's warm enough, run outside. Your AD is incompetent.

What state are you in?

You should throw the Calhoun box out drill in there. Just remember to keep trash cans nearby for the inevitable puking.

I'm used to it. He's probably like five years from retirement. I'd like to take over the post.

Private school.

Running stairs pisses a lot of people off. Do it.

Then schedule practice before or after the girls.

So there will be 40 kids on the court for 50 minutes? Lots of luck. Have a 25 minute practice for the boys and one for the girls. At that age the boys will be spend their time checking out the girls and showing off. See who can make a lay up, shoot and dribble. Don't have too many basketballs on the court. We used to have a 10 question test for kids this age to see if they know the rules. Good question - how many points do you get for a 3 pt shot? Very few actually get it right. LOL

It actually ended up OK. We had about 40 kids who were actually ready to play, so we just rotated two 5 v 5 games going "full court" crosswide on the court. Every few possessions, I'd notice something that need coaching -- be it boxing out form, no one bounce passing, defensive positioning -- do a little teachable moment, then let the kids play.

I've got the boys and it's probably the highest BBIQ I've had in about five years. We've got no tryouts (our middle school is too small), so the variability of the understanding/skill level is pretty random, but this year's group is solid.

On an ongoing basis, are you gonna be able to get dedicated court time?
