I guess he is fine as a backup big who can block some shots. He definitely won't be challenging Hines for starter minutes. I hope we can still get him and PF type like Chol. We definitely need some more height upfront.

Looks to be fairly strong and a good not great run and jump athlete. Would be a solid addition as bench power forward but he's not the guy for a two headed monster at center that we've always had during our 4 year run.

Our PF has to shoot the ball. That's our system. Dan Hurley is not going to abandon that system when it has resulted in 2 rings and a finalist finish in 4 years
 


Giltay ranks in the ACC:
  • 3rd in block rate
  • 14th in steal rate
  • 16th in DR%
  • 20th in OR%
Long story short Giltay is a young, blue-collar, low-usage, team-first center for UConn's depth.

He'd have nice value as a defensive backup center, but I also feel that if we add Giltay, we can also add a guy who is a more impact 4, who can also possibly earn minutes as a small-ball 5.

So Giltay is being recruited as an undersized third center? I sincerely hope you're right.

It is most likely a reluctance of trusting in unproven at college level player’s ability to jump in and be able to take over the key position on the floor. I am sure that those hesitant including myself, respect what our freshmen bring to the table. However, all of us can look back at the struggles being a PG in UConn system. It took Silas who is an experienced player coming from SEC good portion of the year to be comfortable and that was playing with experienced AK and Reed with Ross and Stewart coming of the bench. This is pretty much a new team with just couple pieces familiar with the system. I think it maybe a bit unfair to expect a freshman (unless we are talking top 10 dominating one) to jump right in and hold the hill with Silas on the bench. I think that is a hesitation if we do not bring a solid and experienced PG or CG.

What about Alabama transfer Taylor Bol Bowen?

A 6'10 202 SR (7'2 wingspan) we offered out of HS, career 32.7 3P% with good defensive metrics and a top-200 shot-block rate last season (70th the previous season at Florida State!)

We need another wrench.
 
We must be low on funds. Everyone saying Hines will get primary minutes, Hines is young and will be in foul trouble quite a bit. I'll be honest if this is our other center who will be getting 15 minutes a game it is underwhelming to say the least.

if we are comparing him with what eric reibe did last season, the one standout is his far lower foul rate per block. reibe was almost 3 fouls per block, this guy is at 1.6

He's not as big as Jake. This kid was listed as 6'9 in Fiba right before coming to Stanford. If you haven't noticed the other top teams are going huge in the frontcourt.

He would be good as a bench piece but he can't be our other center in a two headed monster with Hines. Hines is already a bit short for a starting center. We need a 7 footer to split time with him.

Yes and he was a load offensively. His backup was 7'2 barefoot and is one of the most impactful college big men in years.

I don’t think Hines is short for a starting Center. Good reported wingspan too. 6’10 is fine, especially when you’re built like a bull. A handful of the best Centers last year were 6’10-6’11

Clingan and Mara don’t exist in the portal this year. Diop and Thiam aren’t realistic options to be a tandem with Hines. But look at the block % of Hines and Giltay. Elite elite rim protection. It’s a gamble on the analytics, but the numbers are there. Hell, Zuby was an absolute menace around the rim and he was 6’9”. You don’t need to be 7’2” to be an elite rim protector.

My gripe here is that I want a lob threat and Giltay doesn’t seem like a guy who plays above the rim but maybe I’m wrong.

A bit short. Probably an inch shorter than Tarris and 3.5 inch shorter wingspan. He certainly has the physical strength, size in chest/shoulders and huge hands. The point is we have to get a legit 7'0 foot center to share minutes with him, capable of giving us 15 very good minutes per game.

Why?

In recent years there have been very good college centers who were anywhere from 6'9"-6'11". If we sign this kid (Giltay) we should only need an emergency center to fill out that position.

The past 4 seasons we went with at center-

'23- 6'9 245 lb 7'2.75 wingspan and a 7'2 barefoot dominant defensive player as his backup.

'24- 7'2 dominant center and a 6'10 7'5 wingspan as his backup.

'25- 6'11 7'5 wingspan, 6'10 7'5 wingspan splitting time equally at center.

'26- 6'11 7'5 wingspan, 7'1 (not really that tall) as his backup.

'27- so far 6'10 7'1.5 wingspan

The other top teams in college basketball are going bigger and some are trying to rationalize us going a lot smaller than we have any year in our 4 year run. Makes no sense.

You're right. Demeaning or belittling the reasoning and/or thinking of others might have been more accurate. 😎

There was also another good example this season.. Many were "belittled", rather adamantly by one poster, for suggesting that Mullins would benefit from a second year due to his injuries affecting his play this season and the benefits of a second year of physical and skills development at UConn.

Mullins' Dad pretty much stated the same things word for word when he was interviewed about the decision, yet the guy who did the most "belittling" was the first to post there was a report that Mullins was returning. I didn't read the entire thread so maybe I missed his mea culpa.
