Oskar Giltay Commits to UConn

Because I have no idea if Hurley will use a 10 man rotation throughout the season.
Ok I wasn’t sure how good you expect this guy to be but now you’ve confirmed you want Hurley to thread the needle. Someone bigger and better than Koroma that could be part of a 10 man rotation but would also be happy sitting on the bench.
One of the reasons our rotation was limited was because Hurley played Alex way too many minutes. I don't think Nik is going to get 35 mpg. So whoever is the backup 4 will get a little more run than Stewart got in that role in the past.

I suspect we can find a player who is a little better than Koroma, maybe a little bigger to offset the fact that we aren't big at PF (although we are bigger at SF than we were). I don't know who that is, but they will find somebody.

We outrebounded them by a healthy margin and we couldn't score around the rim against them.
Do you think if we had a 7'2" guy that would have changed anything? I'm not sure it would.

I will neither confirm or deny that I've been checking constantly for this news. 😁

Welcome to the basketball capital of the world, Oskar Giltay.

Good thing he doesn't have a name that has potential to be butchered on the Boneyard. If you do, HooperScooper will find you. My plan is to call him OG from this point on.
Pronounced "Original Hangster," right?

Something like that. We're pretty damn short in the froncourt compared to our biggest competition for the things we want to accomplish. Michigan, Florida, Duke, and St. John's are all going to be incredibly tall. We're starting a 6'10 center and a 6'8 power forward with only 1 6'10 guy off the bench currently.
Once we landed Hines, there was no real path to adding a 7-footer, or even a 6'11" player who's any good. These guys cost too much, and it's not realistic to get multiple of them.

Last season we had 9 guys who could really go before you got to Koroma and Millender. Right now we're at 8. I hope we get to 10 guys who can really go. We need a point guard/combo guard, I'm hoping we get Christian Jones or someone at least at his level. We also need another big guy. All we have is two 6'10 guys. It's short compared to what we're used during this run and short compared to the other top teams we'll be competing against for the top prize. Then we can fill the roster out with Koroma and Millender type guys/practice players.
Agree. Injuries happen. Not having adequate replacements is inexcusable with the lofty goals we have.

We certainly need more than 10/10 combined from the position.
12-13 pts would be sweet, 10 will do
probably want 14 rebs

Haven't adjusted from imagining our offense without Solo yet. Anyone feeling like we may struggle a bit from the offensive end? Early on, no doubt, steep learning curve. Wondering more about what our potential might be.

.-.
I don't care if we benefit, would be chaos to turn this on now. You need a gap year for it to go into effect without creating a free for all. It would mean an extra year for Ross, Silas next year.
The gap year is necessary. When the transfer rule was in place to require sitting out a year, coaches still had to work hard and risk burnout. Now with the transfer rule removed so players can play immediately and with NIL/revenue sharing the work for coaches at least doubled and created organized chaos. If the 5-year rule goes into effect now and allows last year's seniors to play 1 more year, oof, I can't imagine the burnout coaches will go through. And of course it will be rough on the current players that will lose spots.

It would be complete chaos.

Koroma looks shorter than AK standing next to him and AK measured 6'6.5 barefoot. Standing next to these guys as an average to below average barefoot 5'10 guy (at least I used to be that height barefoot) is impossible for me to tell how tall they are.

I was standing next to Jake, Bu, DeAndre Daniels, a 7 footer from Xavier, and a 7 footer from Michigan at the final 4 UConn parties and they're all ridiculously tall. It was impossible for me to gauge their actual heights standing next to them when they're all a foot taller or so than I am.
Love to hear about those parties.

I think NH and OG are pretty much the same player based on their metrics and they both fit exactly what Dan likes. Bigs that can block, rebound and can set screens. Hopefully one or both of them make a leap offensively which I think is likely. I don’t think the production from the 5 will drop off much regardless of who is in the game. I think Oskar is a fantastic add.
To round out the roster we need Joey C reincarnated. A 40%+ shooter off the bench. Shooting has been our Achilles heel

I’m definitely giltay of writing him off way too early, but I saw the advanced metrics which see him as a great defender/rebounder which intrigues me. Definitely putting a lot into his projected upside next year.

Hurley’s recruitment of the frontcourt seems to mirror May’s last year. Low-usage albeit talented guys in whom the advanced analytics are high on.

Maybe they make an exception for this year, but that defeats the whole purpose. The idea of this new system is that there's no more appeals or exceptions

Yes. That’s true. But Karaban was Class of 2022 in HS when he signed. Just came a semester early to get a jump on classes and be a practice player, which made sense based on the info he had at the time. Nobody will ever do that again and start their clock early if you have 5 to play 5.

But I doubt we’ll see it come to that. Just more spitballing hypotheticals.

Yep really think UConn could use more size and scoring. We are hoping for scoring jumps from people who haven't done it yet and we have a lot of new personnel without the benefit of having Akex on the court to direct traffic.

OK, I admit I'm biased towards the positives about OG, but the doubters need to notice how much agility and quickness he shows staying with his man on inside moves and how effective he was blocking shots. Plus, he's looks strong and showed speed on the fast break.

The doubters need to look back at SJ's statistics. He was a non-factor his first two years and as a junior in the backup role with Clingan he played meaningful minutes for the first time in his career, 640. His first two years he played a total of 68 and 47! As a junior he averaged less than 1 block per game and as the starter in his senior year he only averaged about 1.5 per game. OG as a freshman compared all around pretty favorably to SJ as a junior.

I think he's a great get and look forward to saying so at the end of this year! Let us pray.....
He does look like he's got quick enough feet to defend with his body and not have to reach.

Hurley has a theme going this year - freshman transfers, love it. The ability to assess at the college level goes a long way. He'll have the opportunity to glue kids like Khamenia, Hines, Giltay, County, Landrew for the next 3 years.

That settles that - next biggest box checked off. Next box is more of a guessing game as the need isn't as clear.

Hurley recruits with such intention. It's really interesting to watch how he canvases. I grow ill watching UK.\

Makes sense since our last three classes have left for NBA or transferred out. Love his plan to restock the cupboard with high ceiling guys.

So we learn who our new combo guard we're landing is next weekend

2, no? I guess if you're talking about the Fab 5, Castle left, Sengari transferred, and now Stew - I'd say the yield there has been good.

Too hard to project HS kids.

We had a 7 footer and it didn’t change anything
exactly. theres this notion that you just need any guy thats 7 feet to win a title. No, at this point you need a freak generational 7 2" + guy that can move, IE clingan, Mara etc and theres just not enough of them to go around. Arizona had Krivas and still got blown out in the FF. If we cant get a clingan, I'll take two 6 10 guys who are athletic and have wingspan over one mediocre 7 footer.

And big doesn’t mean good - Krivas was good but didn’t find him near a Mara. He was stiff and plodding comparatively. Mara was like a prey mantis meets a ballet dancer.

Student section can have a blast doing an "O" face reaction after he scores or blocks a shot.

Yes, that's why I said a lot of people on the board seem to be thrown off by his size and think he's a 3/4 when his position has been a 2/3.

We may play him at 4 sometimes out of necessity but in no way is that his natural position and he's even more shooting guard than wing.
I think he’s a true wing- will see if his tenacity & grit could hang with the 4’s- think will be tough especially as a freshman being 6 foot 6 to defend & rebound with 4’s.

Wow, that is some analogy thee Ruffster, nice.

Yeah but a nickname of Ward or Duncan would go a long way
