For those that don't know - Orlando Antigua is the behind the scenes man who gets all of Kentucky's 5 star recruits. HUGE for our conference. Looking forward to playing his team in the future, because he surely will bring some big names to the conference.

Isn't that the guy with the Dumbo ears who played for the Globetrotters after Pitt? Didn't he play with Sean Miller?

Good development. Been loosely monitoring his post-Pitt career.

Someone on the Houston scout board is reporting that Kelvin Sampson has agreed to terms to be their new head coach. That would be a great addition to the league.

The only thing he will bring to the AAC is a school on probation. USF will be looking for a new head coach in 3 years maximum.

I thought it was World Wide Wes who paid all the players to go to Kensucky

Didn't he have a bullet in his head they could not remove? I recall they continually harped on that during games v Pitt

I 'm skeptical that an assistant coach is the one responsible for all the 5 star recruits at Kentucky.

1) It's Kentucky
2) Cash is king, and Kentucky has a ton of cash.
3) Squid.

if i remember correctly, he played for the globetrotters after pitt. he also, 1 ugly dude

.-.
Wow a former Pitt AND Squid guy?! It's gonna be a lot more fun beating up on USF now.

I've never felt like recruiting was USF's problem, though. They seem to always have a talented team that doesn't play as a unit. I also doubt that this guy is gonna win many recruiting battles with Billy Donovan & the Squid in the SE.

This guy is a monster recruiter. One of the top ranked assistants anytime one of those lists come out. USF's talent will improve significantly.

I was literally about to post the exact same thing. Good thing I bothered to read the entire thread first!

Some AAC thoughts from Rothstein:

3. South Florida's hire of Orlando Antigua is perfect move at perfect time: Why does this move make so much sense? It's real simple. The location of this job falls right into Antigua's wheel house. After serving as head coach of the Dominican Republic's national team last summer, Antigua will be in a prime spot to immediately aid the Bulls' program with his international rolodex. South Florida has easy access to several foreign hotbeds that the longtime Wildcats' assistant can tap into immediately. Another reason to like this hire? Pedigree. Antigua has been with John Calipari since Calipari's last season at Memphis in 2009 and will begin his first head coaching job with three Final Fours and a national championship on his resume. The personnel on the Bulls' roster isn't terrible either. South Florida has two quality young big men in freshmen Chris Perry and John Egbunu along with a talented point guard in Anthony Collins, who only played eight games this past season due to a knee injury. If Collins can get healthy and Antigua can add a perimeter piece or two in the late signing period, the Bulls will have a chance to make a jump next season in the American.

4. If John Lucas winds up at Houston, expect Myles Turner to follow: And that would create major shock waves throughout college basketball. Lucas has emerged as a legitimate candidate for the opening at Houston and multiple sources have told CBSSports.com that the top remaining high school player in America will follow him if he indeed becomes the next head coach of the Cougars. Lucas has worked out Turner on a near daily basis over the past few months and is in his ear more than anyone during the recruiting process. Houston has struggled to be relevant nationally since the mid 1980s, but that would immediately change if it hired Lucas and he brought the 7-foot Turner along for the ride. With Turner, TaShawn Thomas, DanuelHouse, Danrad "Chicken" Knowles, and point guard L.J. Rose, the Cougars will immediately be able to compete with every team they'd have to play in the American.

5. UConn's run proves SMU should have been in the tourney: I usually let things like this go immediately after Selection Sunday, but the facts are the facts. The Mustangs swept UConn this season and now the Huskies are now headed to the Final Four. I'm well aware that Larry Brown's team had a few bad losses but they also had several impressive wins and two of them were against UConn. The Mustangs belonged in the NCAA Tournament and that's just a fact of life. Instead, SMU will play in the Final Four of the NIT this week at Madison Square Garden and while that's still an important step for this program, the Mustangs still deserved the opportunity to compete in the field of 68. There's only one way to describe this situation -- a miscarriage of justice.

Orlando Antigua sounds like the beginning of a nice vacation itinerary. (I'm sure nobody has ever made that joke before).

If Houston and South Florida can be relevant it would be a big help, and I'm not expecting Temple to be bad again. Memphis and Cincinnati have a lot to replace, but as long as we can keep the 50/50 mix of decent vs. terrible in the conference we're at least treading water.

I really like what Jon Rothstein has written in the last year. He is not beholden to the strong bias of the P5. He really sees things uniquely and writes well.

It's a P6 now. UConn, per usual made it happen. It's no surprise to me that good coaches interest is now piqued by the AAC, and UConn's Final Four is making that happen.

I'm just not so sure about that. Maybe he'll be able to work his Mojo at USF, but if you think he's been the catalyst behind UK's recruiting... I have some beach-front property in Omaha to sell you. USF was arguably the most talented team in the AAC this year outside of the top 5, and they'll always bring in decent talent being in Tampa. Their problem IMO has been coaching, not recruiting.

How have other Calipari assistants fared in their jobs as head coaches? Not very well.

My only memory of Antigua at Pitt was that he wore a t-shirt under his jersey and some announcer, maybe Raftery, said he looked like he should have a pack of Lucky's rolled up in his sleeve.

He was really good and played the Huskies tough. Didn't he also play with one sock up and the other down?

I know you're talking about Antigua, but I'm thinking Sampson is more likely to get sanctioned.

If you actually think USF was the most talented team in the AAC then I definitely understand how you purchased beach front property in Omaha.

No I don't think that, which is why I said they were *arguably* the 6th most talented.
