The women's college game doesn't have the same splashy Opening Day marquee events as the men's game, but there are still a few intriguing matchups:
  • South Dakota State @ #19 Marquette (12:30p ET). SDSU is always a tough out.
  • #22 South Florida @ Ohio State (7p ET, BTN+). I have no idea what to expect here. OSU is a massive question mark after being decimated by graduation, and I expect USF will have a tough time replacing Jespersen.
  • North Carolina @ Elon (7p ET). When was the last time UNC played a true road game in its nonconference? Charlotte Smith, the Arike Ogunbowale of UNC's 1994 championship team, hosts her former coach.
  • #5 Louisville @ Western Kentucky (8p ET, ESPN+). Lots of credit to Jeff Walz for scheduling a road game against a tough mid-major (he did the same last year, traveling to South Dakota State).

Not a game that most care about but after 3 Gardner Webb leads Florida 45-42. Game streamed on SECN network.
This would be an embarrassing loss -- at home -- to start the season for the Gators.

Edit: Embarrassment consummated. Garnder-Webb takes the game, 60-58.

GW holds on for the 60-58 win at Florida. The two sisters on GW, Plentovich, remind me of Sidney Weise that played for OSU. I think it is the head band and one of them shoots lefty.
I think the announcers said Florida plays FSU this weekend in their rivalry game. FSU easily beat Troy today too.

First game in Elon's brand new arena. Should be a good crowd.... probably a record crowd for them. If it were Elon of the past two years... I would pick Elon to win. But alas..... I think the Phoenix will lose this one.

Sidenote... the first home game for the Elon Men will be Friday night hosting............ yep.... UNC(Cheat)

Garner Webb went to Chapel Hill a few years ago and came out with a victory. I believe it may have been the first game of the season as well. So this isnt new. Great win for the Big South.

Marquette won 91-52 over South Dakota State. I was wondering if South Dakota State was projected to have a bad year, but they were picked to win the Summit League again this year.

Didn't expect such a lopsided score in that one. I guess Marquette's exhibition loss to Grand Valley wasn't a meaningful indicator at all.

Regarding USF, keep in mind that Kitija Laksa played major minutes in the World Cup.

Ohio State is abysmal. Got waxed by a reduced USF team. And Laksa--also overrated, sorry--was just 4-16 and the Buckeyes lose by 24 anyway. At home.

Well as bad of a coach as McGuff seems to be, he did engineer a rapid improvement at UW. That gives some idea of just how bad Tia Jackson was.

Ohio State shot under 30% from the floor, 16% from three, 57% from the line, and had 6 assists to 13 turnovers.

If the Huskies don't beat them by 40 Sunday we'll know it's going to be a long season.

Detroit Mercy, here's your chance.

Mississippi State up 71-39 on Southeast Missouri State after 3. McCowan with 22 and 16 so far...

Finished w/ 24 and 17.

Durr had 33 today for Louisville.

Looks like Brown and Cox played limited minutes for Baylor. They absolutely crushed Nichols, got a ton of scoring off the bench.

Mompremier had 14 and 12 in her debut w/ Miami after transferring from Baylor.

Vanderbilt loses to North Alabama 74-71. SEC.
Will Stephanie White ever gain traction at Vandy? This is year 3.

.-.
Cal struggling with Houston in the 2nd quarter. Houston up 23-19

I thought she was a good hire but not working out so far.

Will be really interesting to see how Whalen does at Minnesota. Could be great, but no guarantee.

Have to wonder whether the powers that be at Vandy wish they’d gone with either Ivey or Banghart.

Huge game for Sophie Cunningham (30 points, 8 boards) in Mizzou's rout.
